UNILAG Shut Indefinitely Over Fuel Scarcity, Poor Power Supply

Following the ceaseless protests by the students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, over what they described as poor living conditions on the campus, the institution’s management has announced the university’s closure till further notice.

The decision was taken late Thursday evening after hours of deliberation by the university Senate, which considered the protest by the students as inconsiderate and unfair to the management.

In a statement issued by the Public Relations Unit of the university and circulated on Friday morning, the institution blamed the decision on the prevailing circumstance of fuel scarcity nationwide, and its accompanying difficulties being experienced in Lagos in particular.

The statement, which was issued by the Deputy Registrar (Information), Mr. Toyin Adebule was entitled: ‘Immediate Closure of the University of Lagos’.

‎It reads in part: “The Senate of ‎the university at an emergency meeting held on Thursday, April 7, considered the situation on campus occasioned by the ongoing agitation of the students’ body over poor electricity and water supply in the community, and the difficulties faced by the large number of students living off-campus to attend classes as a result of fuel crisis. Senate noted that the problem of poor municipal service is a national issue that the governments at both state and federal level are addressing.”

‎It added that to forestall further breakdown of law and order, the Senate resolved to suspend all academic activities with immediate effect, and that all students must vacate hostels latest 10am on Friday.
