Seized $15m: Patience Seeks N200m Damages

A Federal High Court in Lagos has fixed December 7, 2016 to hear the N200m fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by wife of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience, against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and Skye Bank Plc to challenge the freezing of four bank accounts containing $15m.

The EFCC placed a ‘No Debit Order’ on the four accounts opened in the name of four companies which were linked to a former Special Adviser on Domestic Affairs to ex-President Jonathan, Waripamo-Owei Dudafa.

But Patience had sued the EFCC and Skye Bank claiming the ownership of the $15m found in the four bank accounts.

According to PUNCH, the matter came up for the first time before Justice Babs Kuewumi on Wednesday.

At the hearing, Patience’s lawyer, Mr. Granville Abibo (SAN), urged the court to restrain the EFCC from tampering with the $15m in the frozen accounts pending the determination of the suit.

He said despite being served with court processes, the EFCC was still making moves that could overreach the court.

After listening to the parties, Justice Kuewumi adjourned till December 7, 2016 for the hearing of the case.

Patience is urging the court to compel the EFCC to immediately remove the ‘No Debit Order’ placed on the four bank accounts in question.

She also wants the court to order Skye Bank to pay her damages in the sum of N200m for what she termed a violation of her right to own personal property under Section 44 of the 1999 Constitution.

Filed in support of the suit was an affidavit deposed to by one Sammie Somiari.

Somiari said it was Dudafa who helped Patience to open the four bank accounts which the EFCC froze.

According to him, Dudafa had on March 22, 2010 brought two Skye Bank officers, Demola Bolodeoku and Dipo Oshodi, to meet Patience at home to open five accounts.

He, however, claimed that after the five accounts were opened, Patience later discovered that Dudafa opened only one of the accounts in her name while the other four were opened in the names of companies belonging to Dudafa.

Footballer Killed By Three Suspected Cultists

A 27-year-old footballer, Damilola popularly known as Bebo, has been shot dead by suspected cultists.

He was attacked by three men around 7pm at a carwash near Greenland junction at Abesan Estate in Mosan-Okunola Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos.

He was going to get drugs after a football match when he was shot. The police were said to have deposited his body in a morgue.

His friends and colleagues described him as calm and easy going. Until his death, he reportedly lived alone at Federal Estate following his parents and siblings relocation abroad. His grandmother, it was learnt, lives in Ota, Ogun State.

One Abayomi, who witnessed the incident said, he and Bebo played football together on Greenland Field. He said Bebo left his boots and shin guards with him to get food at a nearby canteen. No sooner had he left the field than they heard gunshots in the area.

The cultists had been in the area before to trail him, Abayomi said.

“We normally play football on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We played together yesterday in the same group. After we finished, we all went out and sat down beside the field. He pulled off his boot and went to a restaurant very close to the field. He ate rice and after eating, he said he wanted to buy drugs by the carwash close to the field. The next thing we heard was a gunshot. So everyone rushed to our side wondering what happened. But before we knew what happened, we saw Bebo already down in a pool of blood.

“Some people said they saw him with some three guys. They greeted each other but after greeting the third person, he shot him in the head at a very close range. Before they rushed him to a nearby hospital here, the Doctor refused him, they rushed him to another private hospital at the gate, the doctor also rejected him. Then they took him to the general hospital, but he gave up on the way.
“So they now returned him to the same spot where he was killed. It was a very painful thing. The bullet opened his head. You can see how everywhere is silent, nobody can come out. We normally train here. I had to call most of my friends that come from other areas not to come. But those who did not hear about the incident still came this morning and we went to the second field to train.”

He described the deceased as a friend and a brother.

“A very gentle person, he doesn’t fight. He is a very nice guy but I believe there is something fishy everyone does not know. It is obvious that what happened is on a cultist level,” he said.

It was learnt that the police invited some boys in the area for interrogation.

Mr Emeka, a regular face at the field said Bebo was always around the field since childhood. He said people generally converged on the field to smoke and chit-chat. He said though appeared gentle whenever he came around, he might be threading hard path unknown to people.

Suspected fleeing assassins – Chigozie Nworie and Kingsley Ofotele, have been arrested in Ogun State by the Police while escaping to Anambra State with their victim’s Range Rover Jeep – a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV).

The two suspects and another yet to be apprehended, attacked their victim, Mr Tochukwu Onyebuchi, in his Compound at Ajah area of Lagos State using cutlass and rods before pouring acid on him, but Tochukwu survived the assassination attempt.

The Nation gathered that the suspects were hired by the victim’s banker – wife, Oluchi Onyebuchi, to eliminate her husband even as she also supplied the weapons used in the botched assassination bid to the suspects.
The Police Commissioner in Ogun State, Ahmed Iliyasu, who paraded the suspects before reporters at the Eleweran Headquarters of the Police Command, said the suspects were taken the SUV to Oluchi’s brother in Anambra as instructed by her when the Police in Ogun arrested the at Ijebu – Ode stretch of Sagamu – Benin expressway last Wednesday.

Iliyasu added that further investigation led to the arrest of Oluchi on Tuesday, this week, at Ayobo area of Lagos State, where she was found hiding in her maiden home.
“One Oluchi who is married to her husband(Tochukwu Onyebuchi) years ago, but the marriage recently has some problems which prompted the couples to separate from each other.
“The custody of their only child is being contested in court, but Oluchi has another plan. She arranged with the trio of Chigozie Smart Nworie, Kingsley Ikechukwu Ofotele and one other who is now at large to eliminate her husband.

“She arranged for the weapons – cutlass, Iron rod and acid to be used and kept somewhere in the husband’s compound in Lagos and described where the weapons were kept to the assailants.
“The suspects went there as planned, matcheted the man severally on his head and poured acid on him. It was the offensive odour that came out from the suit worn by the victim when the acid touched it that made the suspects to quickly abandon him and took away his Range Rover Jeep which the wife instructed them to take and deliver to her brother in Anambra State.
“Luck ran against them when the Policemen of Ogun State Command sighted the vehicle along Ijebu – Ode – Benin expressway and stopped it for a search.

“While searching the vehicle, blood stain was seen and the two occupants – the suspects, were unable to give satisfactory account of themselves, hence they were arrested,” Iliyasu said.
However, the 32 years old Mrs Oluchi Onyebuchi who is a staff of one of the new generation banks in Lagos, acknowledged that her three years old marriage with her husband is really passing through a stormy weather but said she had “no intention to kill him.”
Oluchi also denied renting the trio of Chigozie Smart Nworie, Kingsley Ikechukwu Ofotele and one other who is now at large to eliminate her husband.

Women numbering over 100 on Wednesday stormed the Federal High Court in Lagos, chanting solidarity songs on the freezing order placed on the bank accounts of ex-First Lady, Mrs Patience Jonathan.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had on Sept. 22 ordered the freezing of some bank accounts belonging to Jonathan.

The Commission had said the action was due to the ongoing investigation into the alleged money laundering charge preferred against her.

Meanwhile, Jonathan in a fundamental rights suit instituted against the EFCC, is asking for a court order, directing the unfreezing of her accounts.

She is also claiming the sum of 200 million dollars against the commission as damages for allegedly infringing on her fundamental rights.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the placard-carrying women, chanted songs in Ijaw and English Languages.

Photo: I Went Into Fraud As An Act Of Revenge, Says Man Who Swindled Woman Of N1.9m

The Lagos State Police Command has smashed a syndicate that specialised in swindling unsuspecting members of the public, on the pretence that it had goods to clear at the sea ports. Arrested is a suspected member of the syndicate, Hyacinth Nwogu, who allegedly defrauded a businesswoman of N1.9 million.
Recovered from him were fake foreign currencies, some drums and chemicals. The victim, Helen Olajide, told journalists yesterday at the Lagos State Police Public Relations office in Ikeja, that the suspect and his fleeing accomplices, who pretended to be familiar with her, offered her a ride in their car in Ikeja.

However, the 28-year-old businesswoman stated that she was taken to an apartment around Ikeja, where her Automated Teller Machine, ATM, card was forcefully taken from her. According to her,

“I was standing at the bus stop waiting for a cab, when their vehicle came close to me and they claimed that they knew me and that they were my customers. “They told me they have a business for me and being a businesswoman, I decided to go with them. One of them spoke French and they claimed that they were importers and had a container loaded with computers, clothes, babies range and other items in the warehouse. “I picked interest on some of the items and wrote them down. They made me sign an agreement to pay some money, which they said they needed to go to Customs quarters and clear the goods.

“At the house, they collected my ATM card and went to the bank and withdrew N150,000. Then I paid N900,000 cash, on August 26, into an account number belonging to one Chukwuma Eke Linda. “In all, I paid N1.992 million. It was after paying that I asked myself: ‘What is happening?’ “I decided to invite my lawyer, who said I should invite them to come and sign an agreement him. Immediately I informed them about signing an agreement, they switched off their phones and started avoiding me. That was when I knew I have been duped.”

On his part, the 60-year-old suspect, Nwogu, admitted to having collected money from her, explaining that the money was shared among three other members of the syndicate. He described himself as a con man, adding that he usually brought his targets to his apartment at 7, Abimbola Street, College Road, Ifako Ijaiye, when members of his family would be away. Nwogu, who revealed that he had been into the shady business for four years, said the latest victim was his biggest catch. He attributed his action on his resolve to avenge a similar act against him. Nwogu, who never showed any remorse for his action, said:
“She is the fourth person I have duped. I started the business four years ago after I was duped. “I was a clearing agent and I lost over N1.2 million to con men. I decided to go into it as revenge. I have collected N20,000, N30,000 and N70,000 from different victims. This is the first time I collected over N100,000. We were four that shared the amount and we all got N333,000 each.
“What we call chemical is a mixture of coca-cola and vegetable oil. It is not chemical. The fake currencies belong to a friend who retired from the business. We refer to the fake currencies as treasures which we tell our victims to bring money to buy. In this case, we told her that she would get over N 5 million if she was able to raise N1.5 million for the treasure. We do not use charms. It is only gullible people that are deceived. “My wife and five children live with me but they don’t know that’s what I do because I usually brought victims home when my wife leaves for her business place and the children , to school.

Lagos Policemen Shoot Teenager, Attack Brother With Cutlass (Photo)

An 18-year-old admission seeker, Samuel Omojuwa, is in a critical condition at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, after he was allegedly shot by one of the policemen attached to the Ketu Police Division, Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Samuel’s elder brother, David, a businessman, was also attacked with a cutlass by another member of the three-man police team on Omojuwa Street on Sunday. One of the policemen was identified simply as Inspector Gboyega.

However, the police spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, denied that the policemen shot Samuel and attacked David with a cutlass, saying the police were not farmers.

It was gathered that the policemen had attempted to arrest a commercial motorcycle rider for allegedly breaking a traffic rule. The rider, whose motorcycle was reportedly confiscated, was said to have struggled with the officers.

The policemen allegedly hit the motorcyclist with a cutlass, which drew the ire of his colleagues at the junction, who later intervened.

It was learnt that David, the son of a community leader, reportedly approached the policemen.

A resident of the area, Abayomi Salaudeen, said,
“The policemen are well known to us. So, David thought he could mediate. But one of them, who didn’t know David, attacked him with a cutlass.
“His younger brother, Samuel, who witnessed the incident, abused the officers from the front of their house, which was a bit far from the scene. One of the policemen fired a shot, which hit him in the leg.”
Efforts by residents to rescue Samuel and take him to a hospital were resisted by the policemen who insisted on taking him to the station. He was allegedly dragged from the spot to a waiting police van and thrown into the back of the vehicle.

A member of the victim’s family, Emmanuel, said the family and some other residents went to the station to demand an explanation for the action.

“But the policemen at Ketu division said it was not their division that carried out the operation. When we continued our protest because we saw the operational vehicle they brought in the station, they later brought him out of the cell.
“He was then taken to the Accident and Emergency Centre at the tollgate area in Ojota, where he was given first aid,” he added.
It was learnt that the victim was transferred to the NOHI on Monday where he was placed on admission. The police were alleged to have abandoned him despite promising to foot the hospital bill.

“They didn’t release the police report on time. They also didn’t pay the hospital bill. The Ketu Divisional Police Officer told us all kinds of lies, saying it was a minor injury and within six days he would walk; whereas the bullet broke the boy’s bones,” Emmanuel added.
The victim, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone from the hospital bed, said he was in pain, adding that the bullet had been removed from his leg.
“I am in serious pain. I have injuries all over my body. Doctors have removed the bullet today,” he said.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Badmos, said,
“The report from the division was that some hoodlums went on the rampage around Ilele Street, Kosofe, after which two of them, Yusuf Aliu and Yusuf Mojeed, were arrested for being in possession of items suspected to be hemp by operatives of the division. The policemen were attacked. It is not true that the policemen use a cutlass. How can they use a cutlass when they are not farmers?”

Dasuki Didn’t Steal $2.2bn Arms Cas, Jonathan Insists

Image result for Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has risen in defence of his ex-National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd), who is standing trial over alleged diversion of $2.2 billion arms cash.
In what appeared his first categorical statement on the arrest and subsequent trial of Dasuki and other personalities allegedly connected to the $2.2 billion cash, Jonathan said it was “impossible” for his former NSA to have stolen the said amount, considering his administration’s huge spending in the procurement of warships, fighter jets, and other military equipment and hardware, to prosecute the war against Boko Haram.

The former President broke his silence in faraway United Kingdom (UK), where he delivered a lecture on “Youth Entrepreneurship”, at the prestigious Oxford Union.
Hear him: “They said the National Security Adviser (Dasuki) stole $2.2billion. I don’t believe somebody can just steal $2.2 billion.
“We bought warships, we bought aircraft, we bought lots of weapons for the army and so on and so forth and you are still saying 2.2 billion, so where did we get the money to buy all those things?
“Yes, there were some issues. Yes, there are still corruption issues but some of it were over blown. I’d say exaggerated and they give a very bad impression about our nation. You cannot say the national security adviser stole $2.2billion. It is not just possible.”
While recognising the fact that further comments may be subjudice, since the case was before the court, the former President said it was important to allow the judicial process run its full course.

The Group General Manager Public Affairs Division of NNPC, Garba Deen Muhammed, who spoke in Abuja, stated that any fuel pump increase would come from Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Authority (PPPRA).

Kyari, who spoke in Lagos on the need to increase fuel pump price, stated that with the current price of foreign exchange, it was no longer feasible selling petrol at N145 per litre.
He said: “We have a very difficult business environment. It is impossible today to import products at the current market price.”
But reacting to this, Garba Deen said: “The statement was made within the context of technical terms and not downstream operations. But the bottom-line is that there is absolutely no plans by government to increase fuel price above the N145 per litre maximum level.
“If there is going to be anything like that the agency responsible for fixing price – the PPPRA will definitely communicate to Nigerians and give reasons why that will happen but as at this moment there is absolutely no plan to do that and no need to do that because we have more than enough supply.
“We also have long term procurement contracts with our suppliers and the usual reasons that will necessitate any review of price at the moment have been well taken care of. We have long term contract and enough stock.”
