World Rankings: Murray Ready To Topple Djokovic

Adeboye   03:15:00   No comments:

Andy Murray insists his consistency on court is enough to overtake Novak Djokovic at the top of the rankings and finish the year as world number one The Serb currently leads the way by 2,415 points, but after a year in which he won his second Wimbledon and Olympic titles, Murray is hot on Djokovic’s heels and could take top spot before next month’s ATP World Tour Finals in London.

Should the 29-year-old win this week’s Erste Bank Open in Vienna, he will narrow the gap on 12-time major winner Djokovic by 500 points, before the game’s finest then travel to Paris next week for the final Masters 1000 event of the season.

“I was close, if not to finish number one a few years ago, around the US Open time. But to finish the year-end world number one would be my best chance,” Murray told Sky Sports.

“If you talk about getting to number one, it’s not about individual tournaments, it’s about a 12-month period and obviously you want to be consistent and get to the latter stages of as many tournaments as possible, which I’ve done the last few months and obviously I will try and do over the next few events if it’s possible.

US Open: Murray Powers Into Third Round

Adeboye   10:25:00   No comments:

Andy Murray and Dan Evans joined Kyle Edmund in the third round of the US Open, making it the first time since 1968 that three British men have gone that far into the tournament.

Second seed Murray won 6-4 6-1 6-4 under the new roof on Arthur Ashe Stadium as a storm hit New York.

Evans beat German Alexander Zverev 6-4 6-4 5-7 6-2 to reach the third round for the first time in three years.

Murray now faces Italian Paolo Lorenzi while Evans faces Swiss Stan Wawrinka.

Edmund, 21, reached the third round with a straight-sets win on Wednesday.

Paul Hutchins, Roger Taylor and Peter Curtis were the last three British players to make the third round of the US Open in the same year, in 1968.

Sixth seed Kei Nishikori of Japan beat Russia’s Karen Khachanov 6-4 4-6 6-4 6-3 and Austrian eighth seed Dominic Thiem saw off Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania 6-4 6-3 6-2, reports the BBC.

In the women’s draw, Naomi Broady was beaten 7-6 (11-9) 6-3 by fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland.

A flurry of resistance from Granollers at the end of the first set, and a stadium reverberating to the noise of spectators and rain, could not derail Murray.

“It’s tough, you couldn’t really hear the ball, which makes it tricky, but we’re lucky to play under the roof because otherwise there’d be no tennis right now,” said Murray.

The Scot, 29, went through in two hours and 22 minutes to take his record to 24 wins and one defeat since the beginning of Queen’s Club in June.

There were 34 winners but a first-serve percentage of just 43% and 28 unforced errors will give him something to work on before he returns to action on Saturday.

Murray Wins 5th Queen’s Club Title, Federer’s Conqueror Loses To Mayer

Adeboye   08:55:00   No comments:

Britain’s Andy Murray on Sunday smothered Milos Raonic’s huge serve to become the first man to win the Queen’s Club title five times.

Raonic led by a set and 3-0 before Murray became the first player this week to break the Canadian’s serve, doing so twice in succession.

The top seed and defending champion went on to win 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-3.

The Scot overtakes the likes of John McEnroe, Boris Becker and Roy Emerson with five Aegon Championships titles.

McEnroe was courtside for the final in his role as coach to Raonic, with the American’s old adversary Ivan Lendl in the opposite corner after rejoining the Murray camp this week.

“It was nice of him to stick around for the presentation,’’ Murray joked after seeing that Lendl had quickly left the court.

“It was obviously a good first week back together.’’

In Germany, Florian Mayer beat German compatriot Alexander Zverev 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 in the final of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany on Sunday.

Zverev had on Saturday claimed a shock victory over Roger Federer in the semi-finals, becoming the first teenager to beat the Swiss since 2006.

The 19-year-old played aggressively in the opening stages but Mayer, 32, kept his composure to win the opening set.

Zverev fought back to take the second set but Mayer secured the final set to close out victory.

Meanwhile, Madison Keys of the U.S. also on Sunday beat Barbora Strycova in straight sets to win the Aegon Classic in Birmingham.

Keys’ semi-final win over Carla Suarez Navarro on Saturday saw her move into the world’s top 10 for the first time.

And she followed it up with a routine 6-3, 6-4 victory over Czech Strycova, who finished runner-up for the second time in three years.

It was 21-year-old Keys’ first title of the year and comes a week before the start of Wimbledon.

French Open: Impressive Murray Into Last Eight

Adeboye   21:20:00   No comments:

Britain’s Andy Murray beat American John Isner in straight sets to reach the quarter-finals of the French Open.
The world number two saved three set points in a 16-minute first-set tie-break and was leading 7-6 (11-9) 2-1 when play was stopped because of rain.
Murray, 29, outclassed 15th seed Isner after the break to seal a 7-6 (11-9) 6-4 6-3 win in two hours and 40 minutes.

The Scot faces either Japanese fifth seed Kei Nishikori or France’s ninth seed Richard Gasquet in the last eight.
Murray, who needed five sets to win his first two matches in France, followed up his emphatic third-round win over Ivo Karlovic with another solid display against a big-serving opponent.
The Briton also held his own serve throughout – saving five break points, including three with aces – and finished the match with another ace to maintain his 100% record against Isner.
A key moment came in the first set tie-break when Murray saved a set point on Isner’s serve by firing a backhand down the line past the advancing American.
Murray saved two more before taking the first set and never looked back as he secured his place in the last eight.
With more rain expected he will be pleased to have finished the match on Sunday to ensure he has a day off on Monday, reports the BBC.
“It was a very important tie-break to win. I got lucky on his first set point when I guessed right on a short forehand,” said Murray, who has reached the quarter-finals at 19 of the last 20 Grand Slam events he has contested.

Murray Beats Djokovic To Win Italian Open

Adeboye   21:19:00   No comments:

Britain’s Andy Murray gave himself the perfect birthday present as he won his first Italian Open title with a 6-3 6-3 victory over Novak Djokovic.
It was a first win on clay against Djokovic in five attempts for the Scot, who turned 29 on Sunday.
He broke serve once in the first set and twice in the second in Rome to win in one hour and 35 minutes.

Murray will return to second in the world rankings before the French Open, which begins on May 22.
He broke the world number one early in the first set, leaving Djokovic – who beat the Scot in last week’s Madrid Open final – visibly frustrated and exchanging words with umpire Damian Steiner.
A deft drop shot at set point saw Murray take the opener 6-3 amid light rain in Rome.
Murray then fought back from break point down to hold serve in the second set, before staving off another two in his next service game.
A frustrated Djokovic, 28, complained rain was making the Foro Italico surface “too dangerous”, but he was told to continue by umpire Steiner, and Murray immediately broke the world number one, reports the BBC.
