A judge in Pennsylvania has set a trial date for Bill Cosby, who is accused of sexually assaulting a woman at his suburban Philadelphia home in 2004.

Former Temple University employee Andrea Constand alleges the 79-year-old entertainer drugged and molested her.

The trial is tentatively set to begin on June 5 next year near Cosby’s home.

At least 50 women have accused Cosby of sexual assault, and prosecutors want 13 of them to testify.

The former star of ‘The Cosby Show’ faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

A lawyer for Cosby welcomed the trial date, saying: “The time has come to shine a spotlight on the trampling of Mr Cosby’s civil rights.”

Once fondly known as America’s Dad, Cosby was the first African-American to host a primetime television programme.

Although many women have accused him of rape, he is only facing charges in this one case due to statutes of limitations.

Thirteen of his accusers may be allowed by the judge to take the stand because the state of Pennsylvania allows witnesses to give evidence of past acts that might display a “common scheme, plan, or design”.

Prosecuting lawyers say these women could demonstrate Cosby shows a pattern of behaviour that is consistent with Ms Constand’s accusations.

In 2004 Ms Constand was 31 when she visited Cosby’s home seeking career advice after befriending him through Temple University, where he served on the board of trustees.

She said Cosby gave her three blue pills which made her legs feel “like jelly” and that he then began to touch her inappropriately.

“I told him, ‘I can’t talk, Mr Cosby.’ I started to panic,” she said in a criminal complaint in December last year.

Cosby has maintained all of his sexual encounters with women were consensual, and that Ms Constand never asked him to stop.

In 2006 Cosby settled with Ms Constand after providing an undisclosed cash sum to her.

A criminal case opened this year following the election of a new county prosecutor who had made it a campaign promise to bring charges against the comedian.

These past few months for Bill Cosby have been a tough one, and things are only getting tougher..

According to Page Six, the 79-year-old comedian has just been declared completely blind from a well-known source, which also added that the comic is currently “in his own personal hell.”

Right now Cosby has been restricted to stay within his Pennsylvania home, with his wife Camille by his side.

The source says:

“He is confined to his house in Pennsylvania, and the only person on his side is his wife,
Camille, who is masterminding his defense. His only friends are the small army of lawyers on his payroll…”

Cosby’s sight has been fading for quite some time as he’s been suffering from a degenerative eye disease called keratoconus, a condition that causes the eye’s cornea to bulge..

Back in January, Monique Pressley, one of Cosby’s lawyers spoke about his eye sight after many noticed it in his mug shot.. She said:

“He’s a 78-year-old blind man who they’ve chosen to charge. That’s not a defense to a charge, that’s just a fact.”

As we all know by now he’s been accused of $exually assaulting more than 50 women, and has spent months going back and fourth to court fighting the many pending cases against him..

On Monday a judge ruled that Cosby could countersue Andrea Constand, one of the women who accused him of drugging and raping her back in 2004. She allegedly breached a confidentiality agreement that was signed back in 2006 when they settled outside of court..

A Pennsylvania appeals court has rejected Bill Cosby’s attempt to throw out his criminal case because of what he called a decade-old deal not to prosecute him.
The mid-level state superior court ruled Monday that the criminal sex assault case against Cosby can proceed, prompting the district attorney to press for a preliminary hearing date.

Cosby, 78, is facing trial over a 2004 encounter at his home with a then Temple University employee who says she was drugged and molested by the comedian. Cosby says they engaged in consensual sex acts.
Former prosecutor Bruce Castor has said he promised he would never prosecute Cosby and urged him to testify in the woman’s 2005 civil lawsuit. The release of that testimony last year led a new prosecutor to arrest him.
In the lengthy deposition, the long married Cosby acknowledged a series of affairs and said he had gotten quaaludes to give to women he hoped to seduce.
Cosby has not yet entered a plea in the criminal case, and remains free on $1m bail posted after his 30 December arrest.
“We [are] look[ing] forward to the court setting a date so we can present our case,” said Kevin Steele, Montgomery County’s district attorney, in a statement.
Cosby’s lawyers were considering whether to respond to Monday’s ruling, a spokesman said. He could potentially appeal again to the state supreme court, but it’s unclear if that would delay the case, reports The Associated Press.
“He may do that, but the critical question will be whether the supreme court will give him a stay during the review,” said David Rudovsky, a University of Pennsylvania law professor.
Cosby is meanwhile locked in a number of legal battles around the country with women who accuse him of sexual assault or defamation.
He has countersued some of them, including the Pennsylvania accuser. His lawsuit accuses her of breach of contract for talking to police who reopened the case last year, given the confidential settlement of the lawsuit she filed against him after Castor turned down the case.‎
