The Federal Government has released about N13bn to the National Youth Service Corps to assist the agency to pay the outstanding allowances of corps members.

With this development, the NYSC can now proceed with the mobilisation of prospective corps members in the country.

Our correspondent learnt that corps members and the NYSC workers had been jubilating since the news got to them.

The spokesperson for the NYSC, Mrs. Abosede Aderibigbe, confirmed the release of the N13bn in an interview with The PUNCH on Tuesday in Abuja.

She was reacting to enquiries about the amount following an earlier statement in which the NYSC was commending the Federal Government for “its prompt intervention, approval and release of funds to accommodate the 2016 Batch ‘A’(Stream II) Orientation course.”

She said, “The management of the NYSC also wishes to use this medium to inform and assure prospective corps members, parents, guardians and the general public that the 2016 Batch ‘A’ stream II orientation course holds as scheduled from Saturday, May 21 to Monday, June 6, 2016.”

According to her, the swearing-in ceremony of the 2016 Batch ‘A’ Stream II corps members will hold on Monday, May 23, 2016.

“Prospective corps members are by this notice directed to print their call up letters online. We wish the 2016 Batch ‘A’(Stream II) corps members successful orientation course and service year,” Aderibigbe stated.

The National Youth Service Corps is to deploy medical doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other medical professionals to Internally Displaced Persons camps nationwide.

The Director General of NYSC, Brig-Gen. Sule Kazaure, made this known on Thursday while flagging-off the NYSC intervention programme at Damare IDPs camp in Yola.

Kazaure said the deployment of NYSC in the camps was part of the scheme’s contribution to government’s efforts in assisting the IDPs.

“This programme, which is designed to bring succour to the inmates in this centre, is also intended to compliment government’s efforts towards provision of the welfare needs of IDPs nationwide.

“The scheme, therefore, will deploy the services of corps professionals such as medical doctors, nurses, pharmacist, etc to the centre to assist Federal Government in the provision of medical and other sundry needs of the IDPs.

“Specifically corps members will be participating in medical outreaches, environmental sanitation, educational intervention and general awareness creation on healthy living,” he said.

Kazaure also said that the scheme would use the opportunity provided by the programme to distribute food items and other materials to the IDPs.

He said that the flag-off of the intervention programme was his major official assignment outside Abuja and this was an indication of the importance the NYSC attached to the plight of the IDPs.

Kazaure urged other wealthy Nigerians and corporate organisations to assist government in rehabilitating IDPs in the country.

He commended the military, NEMA, Red Cross, NGOs and various faith based organisations for their contributions to welfare of IDPs.

“I want to thank you all, especially, the corps members who despite all odds are currently serving in the state,” Kazaure said.

The leader of IDPs in Damare camp, Mallam Modu Gana, lauded the intervention programme of the NYSC which he said was timely.

Gov. Muhammadu Jibrilla of Adamawa and the State Coordinator of NEMA, Mr Sa’ad Bello, also lauded NYSC for the gesture, which they said, reflected one of the objectives of the scheme.

The NYSC scheme was created in a bid to reconstruct, reconcile and rebuild the country after the Nigerian Civil war. The unfortunate antecedents in our national history gave impetus to the establishment of the National Youth Service Corps by decree No.24 of 22nd May 1973 which stated that the NYSC is being established "with a view to the proper encouragement and development of common ties among the youths of Nigeria and the promotion of national unity".

The National Youth Service Corps Year comprises of four (4) main segments in which every Corps Members must satisfactorily participate before he/she is qualified to be issued a certificate of National Service. The service year therefore comprises of: 

• Orientation Courses
• Primary Assignment
• Community Development Service
• Winding - Up/Passing - out
  

NYSC 2016 Batch 'A' Orientation Course

The NYSC 2016 Batch 'A' Orientation Course is scheduled to commence in all the NYSC Orientation Camps nationwide as follows:

Stream 1

• Commencement of Registration: Wednesday, 27th April, 2016
• Cut-off date for Registration: 12 midnight, Thursday, 28th April, 2016
• Swearing-In ceremony: Friday, 29th April, 2016
• Closing Ceremony: Friday, 13th May, 2016

All prospective Corps members listed for participation in the Stream 1 Orientation Course are to print their Call up Letters online or collect same from their Institutions of graduation from 21st April to 27th April, 2016.

Prospective Corps Members listed for Stream 2 will be informed of the de for printing/collection of their call-up letters in due course.

Those posted to Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe will be hosted in Stream 2 in Taraba, Nasarawa, Jigawa respectively and their Orientation programme will commence on the date and camp venues indicated in their call-up letters.

Corps members are to register with either Call-up Letters printed on-line or Original Call-up Letters collected from their Schools as well as original Copy of Statement of Result.

All Prospective corps members slated for the 2016 Batch 'A' orientation course are advised to proceed to their respective camps as stated on their call-up letters, Foreign- Trained graduates are to report to the camp with their travelling Passport for identification as well as their Certificates and Transcript for which they uploaded during registration for verification.

These affected corps members are advised to note the camp venue as reflected on their call-up letters to avoid confusion.

In the event of any loss of call-up letter, corps members who collected their call up letters from their schools are advised to obtain Police report and Sworn Affidavit, thereafter, report to the Institution of graduation for further necessary action.

For those who initially printed their call up letters on line can print the call up letters as many times as they want in the case of loss.

Requirements for Registration

• Original Call-up Letter or Call-up Letter printed on-line
• Statement of result endorsed by authorized officer with authentic signature
• School Identity Card, including travelling Passport for foreign-trained graduates.
• Medical Doctors, Pharmacists and Optometrists are to produce evidence of completion of housemanship/internship as well as evidence of registration with their Professional Bodies.

The 2016 Batch ‘A’ Orientation exercise of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) will commence on April 27, 2016.

The new Director General, Brigadier General Sule Zakari Kazaure, confirmed this yesterday.

A terse statement signed by the Director of Public Relations Department, Abosede Aderigbibe, quoted him as soliciting the usual support of the Police Force in the protection of orientation camps.

He called for deeper relationship between the NYSC and the police, adding that “two heads are better than one so, there is strength in collaboration.”

The new Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brig-Gen. Sule Kazaure on Monday took over as the 17th DG of the scheme, promising to be transparent and to prioritise the welfare of the workers and corps members.

Kazaure, who said this during the handing over ceremony in Abuja, said the tasks ahead are huge, but added that with unity of purpose, his administration would make progress.

He said, “I know that the tasks ahead are enormous and the road is rough, but with unity of purpose, we will make progress. Therefore, I urge all to be pro-active, positive and optimistic in all our dealings so that our individual effort will result into success in line with the vision of the present administration.

“On my part, I understand the importance of motivation for staff, I will endeavor to be fair, transparent in my administration to enable us succeed together.”

Earlier, the immediate past DG, Brig-Gen. Johnson Olawumi said the agitation for increase in the monthly allowance of the 260,000 serving corps members would soon yield the desired result.

He explained that the leadership of the scheme had written series of letters to the Federal Government on the issue, and “there seems to be a ray of light at the end of the tunnel.”

Olawumi urged the workers to extend the cooperation he enjoyed during his tenure to his successor.

“I want to call on my successor to please prioritise corps members’ welfare during the orientation camp and thereafter. In this regard, the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme needs to be sustained to reduce the tide of unemployment and promote self-reliance amongst corps graduates,” He stated.

Olawumi took over the NYSC leadership on January 6, 2014.

NYSC Apologises For Delay In Payment Of Corps Members Allowances

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), on Tuesday, apologised to corps members over the delay in the payment of their March 2016 allowances.

The management, in a statement issued by the Head of Press Unit, Mrs Abosede Aderibigbe, in Abuja, said the money was yet to be disbursed by the Federal Ministry of Finance into their account, adding that it was however, liaising with the Ministry to ensure that the money was promptly made available.

The management, therefore assured that the funds would be duly paid to accounts of corps members as soon as it was disbursed.

The statement read: “Management of the National Youth Service Corps regrets the delay in the payment of March 2016 allowances of corps members.

“In view of this, corps members and the public are, hereby, informed that management is actively liaising with the Federal Ministry of Finance to ensure that money is released for disbursement to the corps members through the usual Central Bank platform.

“In the same vein, it will be duly paid as soon as fund is released from the Federal Ministry of Finance.

“We, hereby, urge all corps members to remain calm and go about their lawful duties peacefully.”
