Inter Agree Deal For Sevilla’s Banega

Inter Milan have agreed a deal to sign Sevilla’s Argentina midfielder Ever Banega.

The Serie A club have been linked with Yaya Toure this week but are said not to be interested in the Manchester City man.

Instead they will announce the arrival of Banega in the next couple of weeks.

The 27-year-old joined Sevilla in 2014 and was part of the side that beat Liverpool 3-1 in the Europa League final in Basel last night, reports the BBC.

Meanwhile, Banega says: “I’m very grateful to Sevilla” but refused to discuss an imminent Inter move: “I only want to talk about my current team.’

The Argentina international starred in the Spanish club’s 3-1 Europa League victory over Liverpool on Wednesday, their third consecutive win of the tournament.

Banega is out of contract in the summer and is believed to have agreed a deal to join Inter in the summer once his deal expires.

However, he was reluctant to discuss his future after last night’s European victory.

“I’m happy for the fans, we’re delighted about this victory, the third in a row for us,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“The first half wasn’t simple at all, but then we improved. Unai Emery didn’t need to motivate us, we knew we could win.

“I’m very grateful to Sevilla because they helped me at a particularly difficult moment in my career.

“They gave me a lot of faith and I wanted to return it. Now I’m only thinking about this club, I have a lot of respect for them.

“Inter? I repeat, I only want to talk about Sevilla because of the respect I have for this club.”

Europa League: More Final Misery For Klopp

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp collected his fifth successive losers medal after the Reds’ 3-1 defeat to Sevilla in the Europa League final on Wednesday.

Liverpool had been hoping to end their 15-year wait for Europa League glory having last won the competition, as the UEFA Cup, in a nine-goal thriller against Deportivo Alaves in 2001.

But a second-half fightback on Wednesday saw Spanish midfielder Coke hit a brace in the space of six minutes to help Sevilla to their third consecutive and fifth trophy overall from Europe’s second-tier competition.

It means five-time European champions Liverpool have not won a European trophy since their stunning comeback victory over AC Milan in the final of the Champions League in 2005, reports AFP.

Klopp, meanwhile, now has a fifth successive losers medal from his past five finals, the last of which came in February when Liverpool lost the League Cup final on penalties to Manchester City.

In Klopp’s last match as manager of Borussia Dortmund, the Bundesliga side suffered a 3-1 defeat to Wolfsburg in the German Cup final — the second successive setback in the competition after an extra-time defeat to Bayern Munich in the 2014 final.

But the defeat that arguably hurt the Liverpool manager most came against Bayern in the all-German final of the Champions League in 2013 when Arjen Robben hit a late winner for the Bavarian giants.

“I promise everybody we will use it (Wednesday’s loss) and come back stronger. It was 50-60% of our usual quality and we have to accept that. We will come back,” said Klopp after the game.

Meanwhile, Klopp admitted his team became nervous after they lost the Europa league final 3-1 to Sevilla on Wednesday.

Daniel Sturridge scored a fine goal to put the English side ahead in the first half but Sevilla equalised seconds after the interval and ran out comfortable winners to win Europe’s second-tier club competition for the third year in a row.

“We had our chance, 1-0 at halftime is usually good,” Klopp said.

“Their first goal was not really a problem but we lost faith in our style of play. Didn’t defend well. Nervous.”

Defeat meant Liverpool will not play in European competition next season after finishing eighth in the Premier League.

“We have to use this experience in the right way. But for tonight it is disappointing and frustrating,” Klopp said.

“My players have to have belief. Still we are surprised by our good things. The goals were too easy. We lost faith in the second half and it is not enough in a final.”

German Klopp, who took over as manager last year, accepted his share of the responsibility for the defeat.

“Tonight we couldn’t reach our level – my job is to help the boys to see our opportunity and not feel the pressure so much,” he said.

“I’m responsible for this performance too. We are responsible for not being in Europe next year so we have to use this time. I promise everybody that we will come back stronger, 100 percent.”

Liverpool, Sevilla Clash In Europa League Final

Liverpool take on Sevilla in the Europa League final in Basel on Wednesday (today) with a place in the group stage of next season’s Champions League up for grabs for the winners.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have endured an indifferent campaign in the Premier League, finishing eighth in the table, their lowest position since 2012. As a result, the Reds will miss out on European football altogether next season if they fail to beat a Sevilla team that has won the competition in each of the past two years.

Klopp insists, however, that Sevilla’s 2014 and 2015 triumphs mean nothing ahead of this year’s final at St Jakob Park. The German also be-lieves Sevilla’s Copa del Rey final against Barcelona on Sunday could “make a big difference” to the outcome of the game.

Sevilla, who are at least assured of a Europa League place next season courtesy of their seventh-place finish in La Liga, travel to Switzerland looking to make history by becoming the first club to win Europe’s secondtier competition three times in a row.

Meanwhile, a fifth triumph overall for Sevilla – all within just 10 years – would also extend the record it holds over the likes of Liverpool, Juventus and Inter Milan, who have all won the competition on three occasions.

At the same time, victory for the Merseysiders at St Jakob Park would see them draw level with the Spaniards as the joint-most successful team in the UEFA Cup/Europa League’s 45- year history.

But one perfect record has to end on Wednesday: Sevilla and Liverpool have won all seven UEFA Cup and Europa League finals they have played in. Unai Emery’s holders, though, have not won outside Spain all season long, a run that started back in August in Tbilisi when Barcelona won the UEFA Super Cup 5-4 after extra time.

Villarreal, Sevilla Close In On Europa Cup Final

Villarreal’s Adrian Lopez produced a stinging sucker punch in stoppage time to leave Liverpool reeling and move the Spaniards closer to a maiden European final after their Europa League last four first leg clash finished 1-0 on Thursday.

Liverpool, who got a taste of their own medicine having scored deep in added time to knock Borussia Dortmund out in the quarter-finals, looked comfortable before Denis Suarez broke into the box and unselfishly squared for Lopez to sweep home.

In the other semi-final, holders Sevilla had their fingers briefly loosened from the trophy before grabbing a 2-2 draw at Shakhtar Donetsk that left them well-placed to progress.

Sevilla’s bid to become the first side to lift the trophy three years running got off to a great start when they opened the scoring through Vitolo after six minutes.

Shakhtar produced a spirited response, though, with goals from Marlos and Taras Stepanenko to lead at halftime before Kevin Gameiro’s 82nd-minute penalty left the Spaniards as favourites to progress with two away goals.

Five times European champions Liverpool had not lost in 12 Europa League games this season and were facing a Villarreal side out to banish a last-four curse and reach a European final for the first time at their fourth attempt.

Villarreal had proven to be shrewd opponents in Europe’s second tier competition and in Cedric Bakambu boast a striker with nine goals in this season’s Europa League, while no Liverpool player has scored more than two, reports AFP.

The Merseysiders’ manager Juergen Klopp decided to leave the most prolific marksman at his disposal, Daniel Sturridge, on the bench for the entire 90 minutes and in his absence the visitors looked cautious and laboured in attack.

They had their chances, with Joe Allen firing straight at keeper Sergio Asenjo from close range after five minutes while Roberto Firmino hit the post midway through the second half.

Villarreal, however, had chances of their own with Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet making fine saves to deny Tomas Pina and Bakambu, who also hit the post with a header.

The winner arrived after Liverpool looked to have absorbed everything the hosts could throw at them and Lopez’s late goal has left Klopp’s side facing a tricky task next week, where an away goal would leave them needing to win by at least two.

“It is only the first leg,” said Klopp. “It is 1-0 and they have to come to Anfield where we know how strong we are. We had our moments, we defended really good. This race is not over.”

Sevilla and Shakhtar are the only remaining sides who parachuted into the competition after the Champions League group stage and it was not long before their clash sparked into life.

Everything had seemed to be going to plan for Sevilla when Vitolo gave scored after six minutes, beating Andriy Pyatov at his far post with a curling effort.

Shakhtar, however, turned the match around with two goals in 14 first-half minutes.

Marlos drew them level when he galloped onto a long ball from Yaroslav Rakitskiy and placed his finish past David Soria after 23 minutes, before Stepanenko made it 2-1 with a thumping header from close range.

Facundo Ferreyra, however, brought down Vitolo and Gameiro stepped up to blast home his penalty with eight minutes left.
