Michel Carrick is missing from the squad through injury, while Ander Herrera, Antonio Valencia and Marcos Rojo have all not made the cut after picking up minor knocks ahead of tonight’s 19:45 BST kick-off. Luke Shaw is of course a long-term absentee after breaking his leg in this month’s 2-1 defeat at PSV Eindhoven.
Bastian Schweinsteiger starts against German opposition for the first time since joining United from Bayern Munich in the summer and the 31-year-old World Cup winner anticipates a difficult match at Old Trafford, against a team that he knows all too well from his days in the Bundesliga.
“They are really good, especially in the last three or four years when they have made big improvements,” he explains in tonight’s edition of United Review, the official matchday programme. “Of course they have Volkswagen behind them, in the background, but they have a good team and a good coach.
“They have just lost against Bayern Munich 5-1 but, if you saw the whole game, then it could have also been a little bit different. They are really strong and I would say in Germany that they are in the top three with Bayern and Borussia Dortmund.”
