A former federal lawmaker who represented Ado Ekiti/Irepodun federal constituencies in the 7th legislature, Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, has advocated for a more coordinated effort to share information on terrorism.
Bamidele said the reason for a coordinated effort by security agencies at all levels is to build on the dividends of democracy in order to avoid it’s destruction by violent aberrant in the society and by stateless persons who slip through the system to wreck havoc.
The former Lagos commissioner for information and strategy, suggested that there is an urgent need for the criminal justice system as well as law enforcement to give attention to preventive measures, paying attention to detection of intent and forestalling the commission of acts of terrorism as envisaged by section 46(b) of the EFCC Act 2004.
The topic of the lecture was, “Consolidating the gains of Democracy in Nigeria” with a sub-theme of “Terrorism, Security and the place of Technology in Democracy”.
Opeyemi noted that focus should shift from prosecuting offenders involved in successful attacks or attempts to prosecuting offenders for planning attacks or making funds available.
He called on President Muhammadu Buhari to demonstrate the exemplary quality of a renewed democrat by ensuring that the rule of law and other democratic norms do not become the sacrificial lamb in the ensuing anti-graft crusade.
The former governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Ekiti state urged civil societies to brace up and take up the gauntlet.
He urged them to remain at the vanguard of the clamour for a more humane, democratic, peaceful, stronger and virile nation, where the security of lives, properties and investments is guaranteed.
