Judges in Rivers cry out over threat to lives

Justice Daisy Okocha, the chief judge of Rivers state has raised an alarm that the lives of judges are under threat in the state.

She said threats to the lives of judges in the state by unknown persons who are making threat calls under hidden identities are becoming scary and may inhibit the fearless dispensation of justice in the state.

The chief Judge revealed the minds of the terrified Judges in the state in a security meeting she held with the Rivers state commissioner of Police, Musa Kimo in Port Harcourt.

The judge who recently chaired a Judicial Commission of Inquiry has been receiving death threats from unknown persons and called for increased security around judges in the State.

She said on a regular basis, some judges receive death threats from unknown persons under hidden identities.

Justice Okocha also said judges in the state are afraid of resuming work at the courts that were bombed last year by unknown persons in Degema, Ahoada and Okehi at the height of political crisis due to the porous security around the courts.

In his response, the state commissioner of police urged judges to treat police orderlies attached to them with respect and dignity so that they will be happy to carry out their duties.

He assured that the jobs of the judges and police are symbiotic and will expeditiously look into the security challenges faced by judges in the state as stated by the chief justice.

The courts in the state were sealed for about a year due to the struggle of who should be appointed the substantive chief justice between Justice Peter Agumagu and Justice Diasy Okocha.

Governor Nyesom Wike, eventually swore Justice Okocha in as acting chief justice immediately he assumed office as governor and ordered the reopening of courts in the state.
