Senate suspends ministerial screening

The Senate has suspended the ministerial screening exercise which was scheduled to enter day three today, October 15.

The ministerial screening exercise will now hold on Tuesday, October 20.

However, according to unconfirmed reports, the Senate’s reason for suspension comes on the heels of a court order secured by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against a nominee and former governor Rotimi Amaechi.

The committee on ethics and privileges headed by Sam Anyanwu is however looking into the corruption charges levelled against former governor Rotimi Amaechi.

Amaechi will only be screened after reports from the petitions against him have been submitted by the Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions.

The Senate yesterday, October 14, confirmed 18 ministers after day two of the ministerial screening exercise.

However, with 19 ministerial nominees yet to be confirmed, the screening procedure is set to continue as more ministerial nominees entertain questions and issues raised on the floor of the Senate.

Out of the first 21 nominees from ‘batch A’, 18 have been screened, leaving 16 nominees from ‘batch B’, and two from the first list yet to be quizzed.

The 18 confirmed ministers are: Udoma Udo Udoma (Akwa Ibom state), Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti state), Audu Ogbeh (Benue state), Ogbonnaya Onu (Ebonyi state), Osagie Ehanire (Edo state), Abdulrahman Dambazau (Kano state), Lai Mohammed (Kwara state), Amina J Mohammed (Gombe state), Suleiman Adamu (Jigawa state) and Ibrahim Jibril (Nasarawa state), Babatunde Fashola (Lagos state), Dr. Ibe Kachikwu (Delta state), Abubakar Malami (Kebbi state), Chris Ngige (Anambra state), Aisha Jummai Alhassan (Taraba state), Solomon Dalong (Plateau state), Kemi Adeosun (Ogun state), Hadi Sirika (Katsina state).

President Muhammadu Buhari has however withdrawn the name of immediate past deputy governor of Niger state, Ahmed Musa Ibeto, from the list of nominees.
