One of Nigeria’s most talented and longest running musical groups, Artquake, which comprises ADX, real names Adegbite Adeniran, and Adekunle Tomomewo aka ICE-K, has over the years built a house for themselves in the industry and outside the shores of this land. That they have been together as partners for over 15 years without controversy sure makes them role models to younger talents.
The duo bluntly stated in a recent interview with RazzleDazzle that they are not threatened or intimidated by the younger generation of artistes.
“No, never. The sky is big enough to accommodate anybody. We have been here before some of them. We have our fan base. We can’t because it’s not important. Don’t forget, every product has its market. We are just like the BRT bus, we are on our lane and they are on their lane, so we have no reason to be intimidated. Nobody is competing with anybody. “The good thing is that they respect us because we mind our business. So, there is no need for intimidation or feeling intimidated,” they said. On what has kept them together these years, they said, “So many people have asked that same question. It’s been God and understanding.
We understand ourselves very well. Not that we don’t have issues, but we don’t let a third party come in. I met my partner in 1995, that’s about 20 years now.
“It was very difficult recording songs then. My partner and I understand ourselves because we were friends before becoming partners. For the other groups that got separated, obviously the only thing that brought them together was money. They didn’t see beyond money, they didn’t understand themselves well. I believe why we are still together is because we see ourselves as brothers, friends and partners. It’s not like we don’t have issues, we do, but understanding, tolerance and maturity have been our watchword.”
