Seven students died while 25 others sustained injuries when fire gutted one of the hostels of Government Girls Secondary School, Jogana in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State. The cause of the fire which broke out about 8pm on Sunday could not be ascertained at press time. Most of the victims were said to have died as a result of stampede while trying to escape through two exits at the hostel.
The state Deputy Governor, Prof Hafiz Abubakar, who visited the scene of the incident and the hospitals where the victims were receiving treatment yesterday, condoled with families of the victims. He promised that government would pay the medical bill of the affected students.
Abubakar ordered the immediate closure of the school to enable the students and the parents to manage the trauma of the tragic incident. He said government would soon set up a technical committee to identify the immediate and remote causes of the fire as well as advise government on best way to rebuild the hostel.
The deputy governor They were apprehended at a motor park at Ibafo in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area while alleg- An All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain and former Lagos State Commissioner for Health and Education, Dr Leke Pitan, has lost his mother, Mrs Solabomi Ojuolape Pitan. The 81-year-old Madam Pitan was active and busy attending social and religious functions all through the weekend before succumbing to the cold hands of death late Sunday evening.
On Saturday, according to a statement by Head, Dr Leke Pitan Media Office, Afolayan Adebiyi, she was at the wedding introduction ceremony of one of her grand-daughters, Abimbola Ishola, at Ogba area of Ikeja. The statement reads in part: “On Sunday, she was at the Harvest Service/ceremony of the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC), Victoria Island Parish, Sura, Lagos Island. She was active, hale and hearty all through these programmes. Leke Pitan’s mother dies at 81 commended members of the immediate community of the school for their assistance during incident.
