Man, 35 To Die By Hanging In Benue Over Robbery

The Chief Judge of Benue State, Justice Iorhemen Hwande Friday convicted and sentenced a 35-year-old Makurdi-based commercial bus driver, Tanko Inalegwu of Wadata area of Makurdi metropolis to death by handing.

Delivering judgement in the case filed by the state against the convict, Justice Hwande stated that prosecution, which called three witnesses, has proven its case beyond all reasonable doubt to warrant the conviction of the bus driver who conspired with others now at large to rob three of his passengers of various sums of money at gun point.
He explained that evidence before him showed that the convict had on October 10, 2013 conspired with others now at large and robbed at gun point one Felicia Ahom of her N25, 000; Mwuese Solomon N36,000 and Esther Torbulum of N17,000 out of which the robbers pushed them out of the bus at the Old Customs office in Makurdi.
Justice Hwande also stated that evidence before him showed that the convict was one of the people that robbed the victims of their various sums of money on that day.
He stated that he found the confessional statement of the convict direct and positive when he was arrested by the police, saying the court was not convinced by his denial that it was due to police torture that he voluntarily made the confession statement.
