Senate Scheduled Date For Nigerian Peace Corps Public Hearing

A bill for an Act to approve the establishment of Nigeria Peace Corps, NPC, suffered serious setback yesterday as officials from Department of State Services, DSS, Nigeria Police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, kicked against its establishment.

This was the outcome of a one-day public hearing held at the House of Representatives on a ‘Bill for an Act to Establish the Nigeria Peace Corps, NPC, to empower, develop and provide alternative employment for the youth, to facilitate peace, community services, nation-building and for other matter related therewith, 2015, (HB. 89).’

Earlier in his remark, Chairman of the House Committee on Interior, Adams Jagaban said it is imperative to note that the Nigeria Peace Corps will be more focused on volunteerism and selfless service to the nation where members will be readily available for deployment and posting to Conflict Areas and other Area of National Services.

On his part, National Commandant of the Corps, Dickson Akoh stated that the country have more reasons like the United States of America to transform the organization into a more acceptable government agency.

Akoh explained also that if the corps is given statutory backing, it will adequately address youth unemployment and consequently handle issues relating to youth restiveness.

A renowned lawyer, Femi Falana argued that Peace Corps exits in over 80 countries in the world, including advanced countries like Canada and United States of America, as well as in more than 25 countries in Africa.
He insisted that youth engagement would reduce crime in the society, stressing that the Technical Aid Corps set up by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was an equivalent to Peace Corps in America.

The Nigeria Peace Corps has been in existence since 1998 and so far over 113,822 staff officers and 78,247 volunteer corp members have been registered across the 36 States of the federation including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Even though key agencies like Police, Civil Defence, Min of Interior, Head of Service and some others spoke against it, the corps still have majority…

The consolation as at now was those in favour of the Bill were more than those against…

However, Senate public hearing slated for next week Tuesday and Wednesday
