20 Die In Katsina Auto Crash

At least 20 people lost their lives yesterday in a motor accident on the Daura-Kano Highway in Daura, Katsina State.

The state Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Alhaji Abdu Bagadawa, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the accident occurred early yesterday. The accident occurred at Dadinkowa village, 20 kilometres from Daura.

He said the accident involved a Toyota bus with registration number DRA 33 XA and a Passat car marked AA 993 MAN. Bagadawa explained that the two cars were speeding when they had a head-on collision as a result of wrong overtaking by one of the drivers.

He said the two vehicles caught fire and killed some of the occupants instantly, burning them beyond recognition.

Bagadawa said that 21 other passengers, who sustained various degrees of injury, were taken to the Daura General Hospital for medical attention. The sector commander said that owing to the nature of the accident, those who died had to be given mass burial.

Bagadawa lamented the attitude of some motorists in violating traffic regulations, despite the enlightenment efforts of the FRSC on road safety. He said: “You will bear me witness that two days ago we held an enlightenment campaign at NARTO Motor Park in Katsina on similar issue.

“We will not be discouraged, we will continue with our efforts until we achieve our goal.” The sector commander pleaded with motorists to protect peoples’ lives by abiding with traffic rules.
