English Pundits Hail Iheanacho

Super Eagles forward, Kelechi Iheanacho, was a delight to watch in the colours of Manchester City on Sunday despite the 4-2 heavy defeat suffered by the English Premier League giants against Southampton. Man City needed a victory to boost their chances of making Top Four when the season ends in another two weeks.

However, Iheanacho who stole the show by scoring two goals for his team in an encounter that also saw Senegalese Sadio Mane winning the match ball after recording a hattrick.

At 2-0 down, the 18-year-old striker reduced the tally just before the end of the first half with a beautiful reaction header in the goal area. When his team was 4-1 down, he again reduced the tally with a long drive to beat the Southampton keeper.

A BBC commentator, Simon Boendermaker, said: “Another brace for Iheanacho overshadowed by a dire City performance, you’ve got to hope Pep Guadiola gives him games time next season.” Another analyst, Clive Allen, Former Tottenham and England forward described the second goal of Iheanacho as the best of the six goals in the match “The best goal of the match so far.

This teenager is blinking brilliant. Kelechi Iheanacho is fed the ball by substitute Jesus Navas. From 20 yards, he takes one look at where he is going to place the ball and bends in a gorgeous effort.” The City forward was not particular about his goals but rather he lamented the heavy defeat. “Many things went wrong in our team.

We didn’t defend well. I think we’re going to come stronger in the next game. But we will put it behind us and focus on the Real Madrid game,” Iheanacho said. Man City coach, Manuel Pellegrini, who reserved many of his regular players for the encounter because of the forthcoming UEFA Champions League semifinal match against Real Madrid, said the fixtures were too close for his team “I’m very frustrated because I didn’t expect that performance – especially in defence.

At least four of them [Sunday’s line-up] are not playing regularly. “I think we could’ve played on Saturday and named a stronger team. But in this case we had to prioritise Wednesday’s game [against Real Madrid],” he said.
