Against the threat of reprisals on Fulani herdsmen whose cattle destroy farmlands in some parts of Oyo State, Governor Abiola Ajimobi Wednesday urged farmers not to poison their water, rivers or crops with the intention of killing the cattle.
The meeting was called to find a lasting solution to the report of attacks on farmers by the herdsmen in many parts of the state following protest against destruction of crops by their cattle.
Though he warned farmers against poisoning their water and crops, Ajimobi also told the herdsmen to desist from allowing their cattle to destroy farmers’ crops or attacking them in any form.
“Do not poison your water and crops because cattle destroy your farms. If cows do not fall victim, you who set the trap or your relationship or any other innocent person can fall victim of the poisoning.
“Nevertheless, it should be understood that we don’t want stray cows. Whoever cannot control his cows will pay for whatever is destroyed or damaged. If any herdsmen rapes any woman in any village, the offence attracts jail term.
“From our deliberations, I can see that both parties in this issue have agreed to bury the hatchet. This shows that there is hope of solution to any crises we may have. What we need is peace. We don’t want anything that can rupture the enduring peace we have been enjoying for these years,” Ajimobi said.
