How Police Murdered My Father, By Boy, 10

A 10-year-old boy has narrated how policemen attached to Ayinla Police Division, Agbado in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State tortured his 45-year-old father, Sina Adewuyi, to death. The boy, Jonathan, said the incident occurred on Saturday at number 4, Itoki Road, Itoki, a community in the local government area.

The deceased, a bricklayer, hailed from Ilesha in Osun State. The victim’s son, an apprentice trader, said about 4p.m. on the fateful day, a team of policemen came to extort money from his master, a spare parts dealer, whose shop is located in the compound where the deceased lived with his family.

He said: “My master, Dona Okey, told the police he had no money. He used to give the police money whenever they come.

When my father came out of the house, he saw the policemen and became curious. He demanded to know what the police came to do. But they shouted at him and asked what he was waiting for and that he should go away.

“But my father told them he lived in the compound. They said ‘so what?’ and started to beat him for having the gut to challenge them.

He tried to run away, but they chased him, caught up with him, hit him with the butts of gun and asked him to enter their bus. He refused. But they bundled him into the bus and took him away. He did not return till about 10p.m.

He was in pains and with marks of brutality on his body. He was complaining of headache and chest pains. We bought pain reliever for him, but he vomited it.

“My mother said we would take him to the hospital in the morning since it was already late. But around 5a.m. on Sunday, he died.” Jonathan said the family rushed to Sango Ota Area Command under which Ayinla Police Division falls, to report, but they were advised to go and ‘incident’ the matter at Ayinla Division.

According to him, the matter was reported at Ayinla. He added: “Police came to our house, took photograph of my late father before he was taken to the mortuary for autopsy. They said we should come back to the station the following day. I went with my father’s family members.

They brought many policemen for identification parade. I was able to identify two among the policemen who took my father away after beating him.”

When contacted, the Area Commander, Sango Ota Area Command, Adegoke Fayoade, confirmed the report. He said the two suspects identified had been transferred to the state Police Command Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Muyiwa Adejobi, said there was an allegation that policemen from Agbado beat somebody to death. He said: “We have commenced investigation. Two policemen have been arrested.

If they are found culpable, they will face the music. We are waiting for the autopsy report of the deceased. “If the result proves he was beaten to death, whoever did that will face the music. We are in the era of modern policing.

The question of unknown police is no longer tenable.” Meanwhile, Adewuyi’s widow, Tunrayo, has called on Governor Ibikunle Amosun, the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, and the Federal Government to come to her assistance and ensure the killers of her husband are brought to book.

She said: “He is the bread winner of the family. I am only a petty trader. I have six children, four boys and two girls.

I am 35 years old. We got married in 2002. Who will help me? I don’t have anybody. The government should come to my aid.”
