The infant's 33-year-old mother thought the two dogs(above) — reported as shar-pei and pit bull mixes ,were restrained in the yard and did not pose a threat, police said.
"She left the door open because it was hot and she thought the dogs were tied up," Sgt. Dan Macias with the Fresno Police Department told the Fresno Bee.
The unidentified mom left the baby on the couch and "walked away for a few seconds" when the tragic attack took place around 12:30 a.m. Monday, Macias said. The baby was rushed to Community Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
The male dogs were owned by the woman's 30-year-old brother, police said. One of the dogs was known to be aggressive, the woman told police.
The dog's owner reportedly surrendered them to the Central California Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, where they were due to be euthanized.
