Man Jailed 6 Years In Edo For Burglary

An Evbouriaria Magistrates’ Court sitting in Benin, Edo State, on Tuesday, sentenced a 23-year-old man, identified as Osarumwense Osayande, to six and half years imprisonment for store breaking.

Osayande had been arraigned on a three-count bordering on conspiracy, break-in and entry.

The prosecutor, Inspector Olatoye Oluwaseun, had told the court at about 4am on July 3, 2016 broke into the store of Odion Areghan located at 135, Eguagie Street, off Upper Sakponba Road in the state capital.

According to the prosecutor, the items carted away by the convict were valued at N14,590.

Osayande had pleaded guilty to the three counts when they were read to his hearing.

The prosecutor noted that the offence contravened Sections 516, 413 (1) and 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 48, Vol. II, Laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria, 1976, as applicable in Edo.

The Chief Magistrate, C. E. Oghuma, who read the sentence, however, gave him an option of N50,000 fine.
