Senate Set To Give Buhari Power Over Nigerian Peace Corps

Ahead of the establishment of the proposed Nigeria Peace Corps, the Senate has given President Muhammadu Buhari the power to hire and fire the National Commandant General of the corps.

Senators are, however, divided over an aspect of its general principles which proposes that only the President can nominate the national commandant of the corps and forward same to the Senate for confirmation. 

The Senate has also recommended seven years imprisonment or a fine of N100,000 for erring staff of the corps when it finally becomes a new legally-backed organisation by the Federal Government. The recommendations of the Senate were sequel to a report by the Committee on Interior on a bill for the creation of National Peace Corps. 

Presenting the report in Abuja,weekend, acting chairman of Senate Committee on Interior, Senator Bayero Nafada, said the national commandant of the corps would be answerable to the President and not the Senate as canvassed by the lawmakers. Prior to the presentation of the report, lawmakers, who opposed the proposal of the committee have, however, insisted that the national commandant of the corps should be answerable to the President and not the Senate as proposed by lawmakers.

Senate Committee on Interior laid report on the Public Hearing conducted on a Bill for an Act to establish the Nigerian Peace Corps and submits same in the Plenary of the Nigerian Senate today.

Ninety-five per cent (95%) of the 287 Memoranda submitted, and those who made oral presentation, supported the establishment of the Nigerian Peace Corps.

The Senate Committee on Interior therefore recommends the passage of the Bill.

The Senate passed the Bill of Railway 2016 and Senate President, Bukola Saraki adjourned the plenary till Tuesday, 13th September, 2016 as they go on their annual break.

The Nigerian Peace Corps Bill sponsored by the Senate Leader, Distinguished Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume is awaiting third reading by the Nigerian Senate.

It should be recalled that the Senate Committee on Interior under the Chairmanship of Distinguished Senator Usman Bayero Nafada recently conducted a Public Hearing on the Bill.

The Committee received 287 memoranda from major Stakeholders, Civil Society Organizations and the General Public out of which 96% were in support of the passage of the Bill in the interest of Peace, Job Creation and Youth Development.

The Senate on Wednesday, summoned the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, and the Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, to appear before it and brief the senators on the current state of the economy.
