Oduwa Snubs Tottenham’s New Deal For U-23 Eagles

New Nigeria recruit, Nathan Oduwa, has snubbed the opportunity to sign a new contract at Tottenham in other to play for the U-23 Eagles at the Olympics. The 20-year-old winger, who has played for England at U-17, U-18 and U-20 level, decided to play for Nigeria last year and is expected to be part U-23 Eagles’ squad at Rio 2016.

According to Skysports, Oduwa has been urged by his agent to sign the new three-year contract, which was offered by Spurs last September, but the player and his family believe he could be playing and earning more elsewhere and hope a new club will attempt to sign him after the Games.

Spurs triggered the option to extend his current deal until 2017 earlier this year, after the youngster impressed on loan at Rangers, but he is stalling over new terms amid interest from clubs in Spain.

Tottenhan To Beat Leicester For Musa’s Signature

xTottenham are set to overtake Leicester City in the signing of Super Eagles assistant captain, Ahmed Musa, from Russian club, CSKA Moscow.

Tottenham were previously linked with the striker back in 2011, when Harry Redknapp was in charge, but the London failed to agree a deal with the then VVV Venlo star.

But Mauricio Pochettino is ready to face stiff competition from English Premier League winners Leicester City, who are also interested in capturing the striker’s signature.

The Argentine coach is keen to add to their striking options this summer to take some of the pressure off Harry Kane and Musa is believed to be on the list of potential targets.

The 23-year-old, who scored in CSKA’s 2-0 victory over FK Krasnodar on Monday, has bagged 18 goals in all competitions this season for the Moscow club. Musa has featured in every single league game this season, in a campaign which sees his side needing a win against Rubin Kazan on Saturday to become Russian Premier League champions.

EPL: Pochettino Apologises To Spurs Fans

An invigorating season ended with a whimper for Tottenham Hotspur as a 5-1 thrashing at relegated Newcastle United cost them second place in the Premier League and forced manager Mauricio Pochettino to apologise to fans.

Tottenham, for so long champions Leicester’s closest pursuers, only needed a point from their last game to seal runners-up spot, but collapsed to their worst defeat of the season against a side reduced to 10 men after the break.

While finishing third and sealing a place in the Champions League group stage next season would have been beyond the club’s expectations at the start of the campaign, there was a sense of deflation as they finished a point below bitter north London rivals Arsenal.

Having seen their chance of a first title since 1961 evaporate when they drew 2-2 at Chelsea on May 2, finishing above Arsenal for the first time since 1995 would have given the fans plenty to smile about during the summer break.

But it was not to be as Tottenham’s last four matches ended with two draws and two defeats, reports AFP.

“First of all I would like to apologise to our fans,” Pochettino, who signed a new contract extension in the week, said. “I think they don’t deserve all that happened today on the pitch and I apologise.

“It was a shame and difficult to understand. In the last couple of weeks when you do not play with 100 percent it is impossible to win games and after Chelsea something happened.

“We had the possibility to stay second. It is the worst day as a manager and I feel very disappointed.”

Tottenham were trailing 2-0 at halftime to goals by Georginio Wijnaldum and Aleksandar Mitrovic but reduced the deficit through Erik Lamela after the break.

Mitrovic was sent off after 67 minutes for a bad foul on Kyle Walker but just when Tottenham fans thought their team had an escape route, they capitulated after Wijnaldum converted a dubiously-awarded spot kick.

Tottenham will still take many positives from the campaign in which Harry Kane finished as the Premier League’s leading scorer with 25 goals and Dele Alli emerged as a genuine star.

But the final day will leave a sour taste.

“We need to be sure that never happens again and we need to improve our mentality,” Pochettino said. “We were on holiday and that is the reality.”

EPL: Saints Stun Spurs At Home

Steven Davis scored twice as Southampton came from behind to beat second-placed Tottenham.
Home forward Son Heung-min chased a lost cause for the opener, gliding past Fraser Forster and coolly tucking the ball into an open net.

The visitors equalised through Davis, who slotted in under Hugo Lloris following Dusan Tadic’s cut-back.
Spurs’s Jan Vertonghen had a header cleared off the line, before midfielder Davis stroked in the winner, reports the BBC.

EPL: FA Charges Chelsea, Tottenham

Chelsea and Tottenham have been charged by the Football Association with three offences of failing to control their players and officials both during and after Monday’s match.

Spurs midfielder Mousa Dembele has also been charged with an alleged act of violent conduct following the 2-2 draw.

The FA said Dembele’s alleged eye-gouge on Diego Costa is more serious than a normal charge of violent conduct.

That means a three-game ban “is clearly insufficient” if he is found guilty, reports the BBC.

EPL: Tottenham Title Hopes In Tatters

Tottenham Hotspur’s prospects of catching Leicester City in a thrilling Premier League title race suffered a major blow as they dropped two points in a frustrating 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion at White Hart Lane on Monday.

Albion defender Craig Dawson made amends for his 33rd-minute own-goal by heading home an equaliser 17 minutes from time that has huge ramifications for the destiny of this season’s English title.

Leicester are seven points clear of Spurs with three matches remaining and if they beat Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, they will become English football champions for the first time, regardless of anything else Tottenham do this season.

To make matters worse for Spurs, they could be missing one of their key players in the closing stages of the season after video footage emerged on Twitter which showed Dele Alli appearing to punch Albion midfielder Claudio Yacob in the stomach during the first half.

The incident was missed by the referee Mike Jones and England’s governing Football Association are now likely to review the incident, reports Reuters.

If Alli, the newly-crowned Professional Footballers Association’ Young Player of the Year is punished retrospectively, he could be banned from the remainder of north London club Tottenham’s campaign.

On Sunday, Leicester consolidated their position at the top of the Premier League with a 4-0 home thumping of Swansea.

That result meant there was no margin of error for Tottenham.

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino fielded the same side that overwhelmed Stoke City 4-0 a week earlier, while Albion were forced into making changes.

Saido Berahino, whom Tottenham tried but failed to sign in pre-season, was removed from the starting line-up having aggravated an ankle injury against Arsenal last Thursday.

The other significant alteration saw Boaz Myhill coming in for goalkeeper Ben Foster, who also had an ankle problem, and the 33-year-old Welshman was called into immediate action.

In the opening minutes, he was at a full-stretch dive to turn a Christian Eriksen free-kick around for a corner. Moments later, he did exceptionally well to palm a Harry Kane effort on to the post. And not long afterwards Myhill could only watch as an effort from Eriksen clipped the top of the crossbar.

The breakthrough the home crowd desperately required eventually came with 12 minutes left in the first half.

Eriksen whipped in a superb free-kick which caused panic in the Albion defence and the falling Dawson, who had been tussling with Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen, inadvertently diverted the ball into his own net and through the legs of the unfortunate Myhill.

Spurs should really have doubled their lead when a signature sweeping move in the 57th minute saw Ali releasing Eriksen into space.

The Dane then fed Erik Lamela, whose effort bounced off the post, the third time Tottenham had hit the woodwork.

Yet Tottenham, who had appeals for a second-half penalty rejected when Jonny Evans appeared to handle an Eriksen delivery, ended up ruing all their missed chances.

They had plenty of warnings, with lone Albion striker Salomon Rondon heading wide and also forcing a one-handed save from Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Then, from a Craig Gardner corner, right-back Dawson beat Lloris in the air to head home.

Spurs midfielder Eric Dier was injured in the process and could be another absentee from the run-in.

By the time Tottenham visit Chelsea on Monday, the Premier League race could be over.

The only consolation for Spurs is that they are currently five points in front of Arsenal and in line to finish above their north London rivals for the first time since the 1994/95 season.

EPL: Pochettino Proud As Spurs Maintain Title Charge

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino believes his side delivered the “perfect” message to Premier League leaders Leicester City after an emphatic 4-0 win at Stoke City saw them close the gap at the top of the table to five points.

Leicester’s 2-2 draw at home to West Ham on Sunday gave Spurs the opportunity to reduce the deficit with four games remaining and they seized it in commanding style with a fourth win in five matches thanks to two goals each from the England duo of Harry Kane and Dele Alli.

“This is our dream. We need to believe,” said Pochettino, who is attempting to lead the Londoners to their first English championship since 1961.

“It is good for the competition that we are in behind to try and put pressure on Leicester. I feel very proud.

“Our supporters were fantastic and they feel proud of us. I think it is an exciting moment for the club,” the Argentinian added.

“In football all can happen and we need to be there. If Leicester fail we need to be there. That’s what we are trying to do, put the pressure on Leicester.

“The most important thing is the performance we showed was perfect. It is a big signal we are there waiting and fighting,” the former Southampton manager explained.

Tottenham have scored 13 goals and conceded just one in racking up 13 points out of the last possible 15, reports AFP.

Kane, who took his season’s tally to 27 goals, posted a social media image of a pack of lions closing in on their prey after Leicester had dropped two points against West Ham.

“It is a good thing because it shows how this group is, how our squad is,” said Pochettino.

“We can win or not, but the desire and passion we show and how we enjoy the game is fantastic.”

Kane opened the scoring at the Britannia Stadium with his 23rd league goal of the season, overtaking Leicester striker Jamie Vardy’s tally in the race for the league’s golden boot, and believes the Foxes can still be caught.

The in-form striker, 22, said: “We are not going anywhere. We scored four but could have had six or seven. It is one of our best performances all season but that’s what we can do.

“We are ready to put the pressure on Leicester. We think we can do it. Leicester are five points ahead but we have closed the gap, that’s all we could do.”

Stoke have now won only one of their last six games as their season runs out of momentum with their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Europa League almost gone.

Mark Hughes, the Stoke manager, paid tribute to Tottenham and believes they can win the title.

“We are disappointed with what we produced but Spurs were very impressive,” said Hughes. “They were stronger, faster and had more power in the team.”

“With their mentality, you wouldn’t bet against them catching Leicester,” added Hughes.

“On the night we were very much second-best. We need to pick ourselves up or it will be another difficult game against Manchester City on Saturday.”

EPL: Spurs Hammer United, Liverpool Sink Stoke

Tottenham responded to Leicester City victory over Sunderland with one of their own as they beat Manchester United 3-0 on Sunday to close the gap at the top back to seven points.
The Foxes laid a huge marker down earlier in the day by beating Sunderland 2-0 but Tottenham kept the chase alive with Dele Alli, Toby Alderweireld and Erik Lamela scoring the goals in a rampant six minute spell in the second half.
The result leaves Manchester United four points off rivals Manchester City, who occupy fourth spot.
Next up for Leicester, who are now guaranteed a top-four finish, is a home clash with West Ham next Sunday while Tottenham travel to Stoke for that week’s Monday Night Football.
Kick-off was delayed by 30 minutes at White Hart Lane as the Manchester United team bus got caught in severe traffic en route from their central London hotel.
Despite only arriving at the ground at 35 minutes before kick-off, Louis van Gaal’s men started brightly and enjoyed 67% of possession in the first 15 minutes, although they failed to create any meaningful chances.
United had control of the game but Tottenham burst into life on 26 minutes. After scrambling clear a half-chance in the six-yard box from Harry Kane, the United defence went to sleep and left Lamela free at the back post. Christian Eriksen found him with a perfect cross but the midfielder headed wide from five yards out under no pressure. Mauricio Pochettino roared his approval on the touchline at the increase in tempo.
Kyle Walker answered his manager’s call by breezing past Marcus Rojo and into the penalty area on 29 minutes but Timothy Fosu-Mensah came across to make a crucial block inside his own six yard box, reports Sky News.
Tottenham kept up the intensity in the second period with Eriksen and Kane testing David de Gea with 25 yard efforts, both of which were dealt with by the United ‘keeper.
Jesse Lingard found space inside the Spurs area on 58 minutes but skewed a presentable opportunity wide from 15 yards.
An even better chance fell to Anthony Martial three minutes later. He did brilliantly to beat three Tottenham defenders off the left flank before firing straight at Hugo Lloris from 10 yards out. Curling the ball into the corner seemed the easier option.
United were left to rue that miss as Spurs then went goal crazy.
With 70 minutes played, Eriksen burst down the left flank and crossed for the unmarked Alli to smash home from close range – his eighth league goal of the season.
The goal lifted the roof off White Hart Lane and just as it was returning from space, Spurs made it 2-0.
Lamela drifted in a free-kick from the left, and Alderweireld rose superbly on the penalty spot to glance his header into the bottom right corner.
The United defence were now crumbling under intense Spurs pressure and Lamela made it three with their next attack.
The winger made up for his earlier miss by superbly guiding Danny Rose’s low centre into the bottom left corner from 15 yards.
It was as easy as one, two, three. Anything Leicester can do, Spurs can do too. It’s as we were in the title race. Leicester lead by seven with six game now to play.
And at Anfield, Liverpool hammered Stoke 4-1, while in the early kick off Leicester City enhanced its title credentials with a 2-0 win at Sunderland.
