12,000 policemen trained on human rights

The Crime Victim Foundation of Nigeria (CRIVFON), said the foundation has trained 12,000 policemen on human rights issues. The Executive Director of CRIVFON, Mrs. Gloria Egbuji, said that presently, 269 officers are also currently undergoing training.

She added: “As we are about to celebrate 10 years of the Police Human Rights Programme in Lagos State Police Command, it’s relevant to say that CRIVFON had trained about 12, 000 officers and men in 23 batches with 269 officers and men currently undergoing training.

Their graduation is a few days away and we invite everyone to be part of it.” According to Egbuji, the organization trains officer from the ranks of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) down to Constables. She disclosed that policemen, who graduated from the training, often head human rights desks in police stations.

She noted that after the training, the organisation continues to monitor the policemen, in order to continue to mentor them and watch their human rights activities.

She explained that when the programme was initiated at Zone 2, Onikan, Lagos State, the then Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, who later became the Inspector General of Police, was a beneficiary of the training.

“He was one of those who received training on human rights under CRIVFON’s platform. Several senior officers of the Police Force, who were interested in the programme, also participated in the training at one time or the other.”

Egbuji said that there are moves presently to ensure that the training becomes a nationwide programme for the police in all the 36 states of the federation.
