Martins set for Super Eagles return after two years absence

After two years absence from the international duty, Seattle Sounders forward Obafemi Martins is on verge of Super Eagles return.

This comes on the heels of a report on Completesportsnigeria.com, that the 30 year-old is being seen as a catalyst that could offer stiff competition to Odion Ighalo and Emmanuel Emenike.

According to a highly placed source that spoke with the media outfit, Coach Sunday Oliseh is still not convinced about the quality of his strikers, hence, needs a good option in that position.

Obafemi Martins is believed to be a good option following his blistering form in the American Major League Soccer league.

Obafemi Martins is the highest paid African Player in the money spinning American Major League Soccer league.

The source also disclosed that the energetic forward is on course to be recalled to the Super Eagles for next month’s 2018 preliminary World Cup qualifier against Djibouti or Swaziland.

“Obviously, Martins is an option we are considering in attack and he could make a return to the team but the coach has the final say on that.

“Emenike has not showed the handlers he could be relied on in the games he has played.

“The coach wants his forwards to be aggressive and press high up but that has not been the case,” the highly-placed source told Completesportsnigeria.com.

Martins has scored 14 MLS goals in 19 appearances for Sounders who sit fifth on the Western Conference log.

He reportedly called it quits with the Super Eagles last year but the report has since been denied by his representatives who insist he was quoted out of context.

The goal poacher last played for the Super Eagles against Kenya in a 2014 World Cup qualifying match.

Martins has scored 18 goals in 39 games he has featured for the Super Eagles.
