There are strong indications that the former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mrs. Farida Waziri, may be called upon by the present administration to explain the whereabouts of the missing case file of the former governor of Benue State, Dr George Akume.
The missing file allegedly has to do with corruption charges brought against Akume while in office between 1999 and 2007.
Former Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Abubakar Tsav, had petitioned the anti-graft agency over alleged embezzlement by Akume at the detriment of the development of the state when Waziri was head of the EFCC.
Tsav had raised the alarm earlier that his petition against the former governor were reportedly missing, but has restated his intention to dust the files to renew the cases, especially now that President Muhammadu Buhari is determined to fight corruption to a standstill.
New Telegraph gathered that the plot to review Akume’s case was triggered off when the immediate past governor of the state, Gabriel Suswam, who was invited and quizzed by the commission over alleged corruption and misappropriation of funds during his tenure in office, indicted Michael Aondoakaa, the then Minister of Justice and Attorney General, of allegedly receiving Akume’s case file while in office.
But in a swift reaction to Suswam’s allegation against him, Aondoakaa warned all concerned to leave him out of the controversies surrounding Suswam lately, saying he was now a rice farmer and is focused on creating wealth for his fellow farmers in the country.
Aondoakaa, who announced his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) earlier this year, was responding to a publication in a national daily wherein he was said to have received the case file of George Akume while in office as Attorney General of the Federation.
He denied the allegation, saying he did not collect any case file from EFCC, including that of former Governor George Akume throughout his tenure as attorney general. He expressed disbelieve that Suswam would want to drag his name into the matter with the intent to destroy him.
New Telegraph gathered that Suswam was convinced to drop Aondoakaa’s name in the Akume’s saga at the commission, because he had allegedly worked against the PDP during the general elections, especially his (Suswam’s) bid to transmute to the senate as well as the plot to install the PDP governorship candidate, Terhemen Tarzoor, as governor of the state.
