A traditional ruler from Odo-Onosa village in the Epe area of Lagos state, Chief Jimoh Balogun, and two others were arraigned before the state high court sitting in Igbosere on Tuesday, October 13.
Leadership reports that the monarch and his copartners, Morufu Adekoya and Adefowope Kazeem, were arraigned on a four-count charge bordering on armed robbery, rape and conspiracy.
During the trial, Babatunde Oguntemowo, the prosecuting counsel, claimed that the defendants were alleged to have conspired to commit an offence on March 26, 2014, at Odo-Onsa at Epe area of Lagos state.
The lawyer also told the court that the defendants armed with a gun and other dangerous weapons robbed one Adeomi Ayomide of her wristwatches, three laptops and N272,000. Oguntemowo further alleged that the defendants raped their victim after stealing all her valuables.
Armed robbery occurs most frequently in cities and large towns. Yesterday, October 13, about 15 gunmen besieged an Access and Diamond banks in Festac area of Lagos state and were shooting sporadically into the air.
Residents of the area revealed that a woman and her 14-month-old baby were shot dead by stray bullets during the robbery incident.
A week ago, armed robbers raided the Sam Mbakwe cargo airport in Owerri and stole over N20m in cash and other valuables. According to witnessesm the robbers arrived at the airport in two unmarked vehicles and overpowered the security officials attached to the bank, scaring people away from the scene with their gunshots.
