Why PMB should continue GEJ’s projects – Former Minister

Shamsudeen Usman, a former minister of finance, has called on Muhammadu Buhari to continue projects initiated by the immediate past president, Goodluck Jonathan.

Premium Times reports that Usman appealed to the president speaking at the 56th conference of the Nigerian Economic Society (NES) on Monday, October 12.

According to the ex-minister, if Buhari continues with previous projects, it will ensure growth and development in Nigeria.

Usman also noted that the country had planned richly but lacked consistency in leadership and implementation.

“What is lacking is really leadership and consistency. So I am happy to know that our new president is providing that clear leadership, which is very critical, because it’s the message signal from the top.

“Nigeria is not lacking in good plans; good polices. Most of these things have actually been done, identified. They are in one government file or another. The issues are the same.”

“What is important is continuity and determination and implementation,” he stressed.

Usman, who was also a national planning minister, noted that effort of the transition committee was commendable and deserved implementation.

“Implementation, especially honest and decent implementation is what is necessary,”he added.

The ex-minister commended Buhari for his leadership style that is worthy of emulation.

In his speech, Akpan Ekpo, a former president of NES, Akpan Ekpo, noted that the problem of lack of development despite increased growth, is fuelled by the lopsided nature of growth in the economy.

“Nigeria’s misery index continues to rise despite seaming improved growth trajectory over time. If growth is evenly distributed, then poverty will be reduced,” he said.

According to him, the economic strategy adopted by the Jonathan administration did not produce significant impact. He also noted that the situation was worsened by increased poverty and lack of stability in economic policies.

Meanwhile, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the former finance minister who served in Jonathan’s administration, expressed her support for Buhari in his efforts to end corruption in the country.
