TUC members were not harassed - Rivers police command


The Rivers state police command have denied harassing members of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the state.

The state command’s spokesperson Ahamad Muhammad said the attention of the Rivers police have been drawn to statements made by the congress’ state chairman, Chika Unegbu, that his members were manhandled by the police.

Muhammad said: “It is relevant to state that the Rivers state police command acted to request of court bailiffs/ officials to enforce court judgment delivered by honourable justice J. T. Agbambu-Fishim of the National Industrial Court in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state.”

“The Police were merely performing their constitutional duties in line with the principles of natural justice and rule of law,” Muhammad said.

He said allegations that the police manhandled employees of the Weatherford Nigeria Limited during the exercise is false.

Two months ago, a police officer was arrested for allegedly killing a bus driver, David Legbaraa along Ikwerre road in Obio/ Akpor local government area of Rivers State.

The inspector general police, Solomon Arase immediately ordered that the police be charged to court upon conclusion of the investigations.
