Power failure stalls NIN enrolments

Power failure currently experienced by many people across the country has hampered the enrolment of most Nigerians for the National Identification Number (NIN) of the National Identity Management Commission.

This was revealed yesterday by the Corporate Communication General Manager of NIMC, Abdulhamid Umar in Abuja.

According to him, the commission had received complaints of Nigerians’ inability to enrol for their NIN as a result of interruption of services at some of the NIN Enrolment centres across the country, due to power failure.

Apologising to Nigerians over the situation, the commission’s spokesperson said, “Citizens are urged to please bear with NIMC as we address these issues through the deployment of alternative power sources, even in the face of scarce resources.

“In the light of this, citizens are encouraged to avail themselves the opportunity of utilising our online pre-enrolment portal to pre-register their demographic data and printout a 2D barcode to take with them for presentation at the enrolment centre, and reduce the amount of time required for the exercise.

“Furthermore, citizens and legal residents are to note that the National Identification Number (NIN) is their identity and most important to us, not the physical e-ID Card. We are however already issuing the cards to all who have enrolled and have their NIN.

“In this vein, we encourage all who were enrolled and issued with their NIN in 2012 and 2013 to expect SMS notifications from NIMC, inviting them to pick up their cards at any of our card activation centres on a specified date/ time,” he added.
