Cultists Kill One During Beer Joint Brawl

At least one person was at the weekend stabbed to death while three others were seriously injured when two cult groups, Black Axe and Aiye confraternities, clashed at Omakaejali drinking joint in Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

The clash was between Chukwuemeka Oko and the deceased, Christopher Egwu. Trouble started when Oko confronted Egwu at the drinking joint and ordered him to leave the joint or have himself to blame for allegedly challenging his group.

But Egwu was said to have refused to leave and warned Oko to be mindful of his word. A witness, Okoche Eze, said that, in anger, Oko broke a bottle of beer he was drinking and stabbed Egwu in the stomach. He said the victim was rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (FETHA) where he was confirmed dead.

Eze added that the victim’s group went on a reprisal attack and injured three members of the suspect’s group. When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP George Okafor, confirmed the incident.

He warned youths to desist from cult activities as anyone found in such act would be dealt with. Okafor reiterated the readiness of the police to curb cultism in the state. He said Oko, who hails from Amamgballa community, had been arrested. The PPRO added that efforts were on to arrest all the suspects.
