•As NUJ promises no protection for ‘blackmail journalists’
As stakeholders in journalism industry across the world Tuesday marked this year’s edition of the annual World Press Freedom Day, a non-governmental organisation focused on the safety of journalists, Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), has revealed that between 1992, when it started compiling the list of journalists attacked in the course of their work, till date, a total of 1,189 journalists have been killed globally.
This is as the body of journalists in Nigeria, the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), has disclosed that it would not fight for the safety of those it described as ‘blackmail journalists,’ saying many bloggers and online users have thrown the ethics of the job into dustbins and have, therefore, become irresponsible.
Speaking Tuesday at a programme organised by the United States Consulate General Office in Lagos, the West African Representative of CPJ, Mr. Peter Nkanga, while advocating for responsible and balanced reporting, also insisted that only when journalists are free to do their work that a society can achieve development.
