Tragic young mum dies from carbon monoxide poisoning on first night in dream home

Kimberley Jones, 25, was bought the house by her parents and moved in early to get a nursery ready for her six-month-old son

A young mother was killed by deadly fumes from a fireplace while spending her first night in a dream new home.

Kimberley Jones, 25, was bought the house by her parents and moved in early to get a nursery ready for her six-month-old son.

But she tragically died after being silently poisoned by the solid fuel appliance while sleeping on a makeshift bed in the living room.

Her father had told her to keep the windows open when using the fire - saying he did “not want her to die from carbon monoxide poisoning”.

Kimberley’s mother found her body after she went to the house in Cwmbach, South Wales, to see her daughter.

An inquest into her death heard she suffocated in her sleep after a faulty flue meant fumes from the fire - which ran off coal or wood - filled the room.

The hearing in Aberdare today was told she left her son with her parents so she could spend the evening decorating in August 2013.

Her father Andrew had earlier been helping paint a nursery for his grandson in the semi-detached house.

He said: “Before I left I told her to keep the windows open because I did not want her to die from carbon monoxide poisoning.

“That will haunt me for the rest of my days.”

Her mother Helen said: “That night changed our lives forever.

"We will never come to terms with losing her.

“It should have been a new start but nothing can bring her back.”

A heating engineer who inspected the fire after the tragedy estimated it had not been serviced for “about four or five years”.

But the property’s previous owner Linda Parfaitt - a former friend of the Jones family - said it was maintained every 12 to 18 months.

Coroner Andrew Barkley returned a narrative verdict, saying a blocked flue led to carbon monoxide filling the room.
