National Grid Collapses, Drops Power Transmission To Zero

The national power grid collapsed on Thursday, grounding power transmission in the country to zero.
Data from the country’s System Operator, which showed this, revealed that all the Discos received zero Mega Watts (MW) when the grid collapsed.
‘New Telegraph’, however, learnt that efforts to immediately restore electricity supply was fruitless.
Notwithstanding the restoration of the grid, DISCOs received dismal allocation, which worsened the power situation across the country.
For instance, out of the 450MW that was due the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, the Disco only got about 50MW when the situation began to improve. Before the collapse, AEDC got an allocation of 257.97MW and the nationwide generation level stood at 2,243.2MW.
Officials from the Federal Ministry of Power had attributed the never-ending fall in electricity generation to vandalism of gas pipelines and destruction of vital infrastructure in the industry by miscreants.
‘New Telegraph’ had exclusively reported on Wednesday that power generation, transmission and supply in the country crashed again on Tuesday, March 29, to 2, 906 megawatt from 3778.90mw peak it attained on Monday.
A new record generation peak of 5074.7mw and the highest maximum daily energy wheeled nationwide of 109,372mw were earlier attained on Tuesday, February 2, 2016.
The Nigerian Electricity System (NES) operator, however, said on Tuesday that the power transmission to the 11 distribution companies fell by about 873mw between Monday and Tuesday. NES, an arm of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) maintained in its website that it transmitted 2,905.70mw to the 11 electricity distribution companies across the country.

Okorocha Swears-In New SSG, Calls On IMSU Lecturers To End Strike

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has sworn-in the new Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Sir George Eche, who replaces Sir Jude Ejiogu, who was dropped penultimate week by the governor. Eche was drafted from the state civil service.

Speaking at the event, Okorocha used the opportunity to also call on the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Imo State University chapter to call off the strike action embarked upon by the lecturers of the university, expressing shock that the lecturers would go on strike in the second week of March, over February salary.

His words: “It is shocking that ASUU in IMSU told lecturers to go on strike in the second week of March because of February salary, and when they had been paid full salary for the month of January. This is shocking. It is not acceptable to the state government. ASUU in IMSU should call off the strike without further delay because it is by all standards unacceptable and unjustifiable.”

The governor continued: “We shall continue to keep faith with the workers welfare. If the workers in the state did not go on strike over two months’ salary owed to them, we would have continued to go out of our way to pay them full. But they went on strike over two months’ salary and we then agreed with labour that they should take 70 per cent of the total income of the state to pay salaries and pensions, while the government takes only 30 per cent for capital expenditure. And now they have seen the truth of what we have been telling them about the finances of the state.”

Five Top US Women Footballers Sue For Better Pay

Five senior members of the World Cup-winning US football team have filed a lawsuit against the national federation for wage discrimination.

Alex Morgan, Carli Lloyd, Megan Rapinoe, Becky Sauerbrunn and Hope Solo say they are paid less than half of what the male USA players receive.

“The numbers speak for themselves,” said goalkeeper Solo in a statement.

The US Soccer Federation said it was disappointed, given the work it had done in building the women’s game.

American women’s football has dominated the international game in recent decades, with a string of titles.

“We are the best in the world, have three World Cup Championships, four Olympic Championships, and the USMNT [men’s team] get paid more just to show up than we get paid to win major championships,” said Solo.

Her team-mate Lloyd, who was named the best player at last year’s World Cup, said they had been patient over the years in waiting for action to deliver fair pay, reports the BBC.

Former Everton and LA Galaxy winger Landon Donovan – who won 157 caps for the US men’s team – tweeted his support for the women’s team’s cause.

“#USWNT absolutely deserve to be treated fairly in all ways,” he said.

“Important to remember that these issues are/can be collectively bargained.”

The lawsuit against the US Soccer Federation was filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on Thursday morning.

One of the lawyers representing the players, Jeffrey Kessler, said the women’s game generated more income for US Soccer than the men’s and it was time to address the “discriminatory and unfair treatment” they have endured for years.

The five players were acting on behalf of all the players, he said.

There has been an ongoing legal battle between the federation and the players’ union over collective bargaining.

A statement from US Soccer said it had not yet seen the complaint.

But it added: “We have been a world leader in women’s soccer and are proud of the commitment we have made to building the women’s game in the United States over the past 30 years.”

Recovered N5m: Two Bankers In Police Custody

More facts emerged yesterday in connection with the N5 million which the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit said it discovered the state House of Assembly Complex, Alausa, Ikeja Sources yesterday said that two bank officials of an undisclosed bank were being detained at Alausa Police Divisional Headquarters, following the ‘missing N5 million’ since December last year.

A source at the state task force headquarters, Alausa, also said that the announcement of the ‘missing money’ might have led to promotion and award of recognition for the two officers who discovered the money – Inspector Eliziekia Abiona and Ogunbiyi Agbabu.

When contacted yesterday, the task force Chairman, SP Olayinka Egbeyemi, refused to comment on the issue on the grounds that he was not authorised to speak to the press. He directed our correspondent to either the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mrs. Dolapo Badmos, or the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni.

However, a source said: “The DPO Alausa called oga (the task force chairman) this morning (yesterday) that two bankers from the bank that owns are being detained over the money. “Our men have done a good job here by recovering the money and refused to share it.

The chairman heard about the money last week when he assumed office and he ordered that the money should be announced publicly. “In fact, he commended the officers who found the money but wondered why the discovery of the money was not made publicly before he assumed office because it could boost the image of the police.”

Another officer, who pleaded anonymity, said: “When such money is found, it ought to be announced that such money is in our custody because there is no way you will keep such money and the public will know.”

England Team Mates Set To Resume Title Rivalry

Having combined seamlessly for England, the players of Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur will resume battle in the Premier League title race this weekend with the two main protagonists facing testing fixtures.

Hostilities were put to one side as the likes of Leicester striker Jamie Vardy and Spurs counterpart Harry Kane both impressed as England won in Germany and lost at home to the Netherlands.

Yet with the international break over, Kane, one of five Spurs players in the England squad, and Vardy, who played alongside England debutant and club mate Danny Drinkwater, are back in opposing camps.

Kane, who scored against Germany, will be hoping that his team win at Liverpool on Saturday and narrow the gap to leaders Leicester, who play Southampton at home on Sunday.

Vardy, who scored his first two goals for England in Saturday’s game in Berlin and Tuesday’s match at Wembley, is hoping to get back on the scoresheet after five league games without a goal.

“The (England) goals can only be good for my confidence and I will hopefully be scoring again at the weekend,” he said.

With only seven matches remaining, Leicester, seeking a fourth straight win when they face Southampton, are top with 66 points, five ahead of Spurs on 61, reports Reuters.

Arsenal are a further six behind with a game in hand and on Saturday have a quick opportunity for revenge against Watford, who ended the Gunners’ bid for a third successive FA Cup triumph when they beat them 2-1 at the Emirates three weeks ago.

Fourth-placed Manchester City, whose title hopes virtually evaporated when they lost 1-0 at home to Manchester United, travel to Bournemouth, while fifth-placed West Ham United will be looking to continue their top-four push at home to Crystal Palace.

Palace have tumbled from fifth on New Year’s Day to 16th and will be desperate to end a run of 13 league matches without a win that has dropped them far too close to the relegation zone for comfort.

Bottom-placed Aston Villa, who sacked French manager Remi Garde on Tuesday, look to have very little chance of escaping and have caretaker Eric Black in charge for the visit of outgoing champions Chelsea on Saturday.

Unless Palace’s nosedive continues, two from Norwich City, Sunderland and Newcastle United look set to go down with Villa.

Norwich are at home to Newcastle, who now have 11 players sidelined with injuries after goalkeeper Rob Elliot was ruled out for the season after damaging knee ligaments in Ireland’s 2-2 draw with Slovakia.

Terrorism Fears Overshadowing Nuclear Summit In Washington

President Obama and more than 50 world leaders convened in Washington Thursday in an attempt to reach global cooperation on securing nuclear weapons materials.
Obama launched the summit nearly six years ago and has made freeing the world of nuclear weapons a theme of his presidency.
The gathering of world leaders comes a week after bombings by Islamic State militants in Brussels killed 32 people and injured more than 300 and days after a suicide bombing at a park in Lahore, Pakistan on Easter Sunday. Pakistan’s prime minister decided to forgo the summit following the attack, sending the country’s minister of state for foreign affairs in his place.
While the summit mainly aims to address nuclear proliferation, the threat of terrorism, particularly from the Islamic State, is likely to overshadow much of the talksn reports ABC News.
Here are some threats to the United States and its global partners being discussed at the 2016 nuclear summit:

North Korean Nuclear Power

The Obama administration has made reducing nuclear threats a key foreign policy goal and the two-day summit kicked off with meetings to discuss North Korea. The president met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and South Korean President Park Geun-hye, two U.S. allies that share concerns about North Korea’s nuclear ambitions that have escalated of late following the country’s recent rocket launch.
Obama is also expected to hold a sit-down with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is considered to have influence with North Korean leaders.

Nuclear Terrorism and the Threat of ISIS

Nuclear terrorism and the Islamic State, also known as ISIS, is also a top focus at the summit.
Obama will hold a special meeting to address concerns that ISIS and other terrorist groups could obtain nuclear weapons and possibly radioactive material, which they could use in future attacks.
The summit will focus on how nuclear and radiological terrorism is a global issue. Leaders will press the need for international organisations and the law enforcement community to help track those individuals involved in the illicit trafficking of radioactive or nuclear materials.

The Dread of Unknown Nuclear Stockpiles

Russia, a country that possesses a large supply of nuclear weapons, is boycotting the 2016 summit.
President Vladimir Putin’s decision to skip the high-level talks raises questions about how much the summit can achieve if one of the world’s biggest nuclear powers will not be a part of any agreements or discussions about how to deal with threats around the world.
The U.S. and Russia hold the two largest nuclear weapons stockpiles, eclipsing that held by the rest of the world.

Bundesliga: Dortmund Set For Early Return To Europe’s Elite

Coach Thomas Tuchel will be able to claim that Borussia Dortmund have achieved their pre-season target with six Bundesliga games to spare if they secure a Champions League berth by beating Werder Bremen on Saturday.

Tuchel’s side have enjoyed a stellar season in his first campaign in charge since replacing Juergen Klopp, with his team having gone unbeaten so far this year, winning 13 and drawing two matches in all competitions in 2016.

Dortmund, better than championship leaders Bayern since the winter break, are in second place on 64 points, with the Bavarians, on 69, chasing a record fourth consecutive Bundesliga title and a treble.

Dortmund could also potentially end up with three titles, if Bayern slip up, with the team still involved in both the Europa League and German Cup.

Tuchel had stated that his pre-season goal was not so much as claiming a league title for the first time since 2012 but delivering a campaign worthy of the club’s name, especially after last season’s travails.

They were bottom at the halfway stage in the 2014-15 season and despite a late surge, missed out on Champions League action as Klopp announced his intention to depart in April.

This season, however, they have shadowed Bayern since the start of the campaign and have built up a 16-point lead over third-placed Hertha Berlin with Schalke 04 a further four points adrift in fourth, reports Reuters.

Victory against Bremen would secure a top-three finish or even a top-two spot if Hertha lose at Borussia Moenchengladbach, guaranteeing a return to Europe’s premier club competition.

Tuchel has midfielders Julian Weigl, who recovered from a throat infection this week, and Sven Bender available, though the participation of Ilkay Guendogan remains in doubt.

The Germany international, nursing a foot injury for the past few weeks, has yet to return to full training with the team and poorly central defender Neven Subotic is also doubtful.

Werder, a point above the relegation zone, could be without Peru striker Claudio Pizarro, who picked up a back injury in a 1-0 World Cup loss at Uruguay on Wednesday.

“I pulled my back towards the end of the first half,” Pizarro, who will undergo medical checks later on Thursday, said. “After the break, I tried to play on but I could not do it without it being painful.”

Bayern, who take on Benfica in the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday, host Eintracht Frankfurt, who will set a new league record if they fail to score against the league leaders for an eighth consecutive encounter with the Bavarians.

Sunderland To Terminate Eboue Contract After Ban

Defender Emmanuel Eboue is set have his contract with Sunderland cancelled after soccer’s governing body FIFA imposed a one-year ban on the Ivorian for failing to pay his former agent, the Premier League club said on its website (www.safc.com).

The 32-year-old, who joined Sunderland until the end of the season on March 9, has yet to play for the club and has not featured for his country since 2013 after he lost his place to Paris St Germain’s Serge Aurier.

Sunderland also said Eboue did not make the club aware of the matter and had given the former Arsenal player two weeks to appeal the decision.

FIFA said the Ivorian’s ban would be lifted if he paid the outstanding amount to the agent, who was named as Sebastien Boisseau, reports Reuters.

Eboue was ordered to pay the undisclosed amount by FIFA’s Players’ Status Committee in July 2013, a decision taken on the basis of the players’ agents rules which were in force at the time.

Eboue was fined 30,000 Swiss francs ($31,162) in September 2014 for failing to comply with the decision and given four months to settle the debut, FIFA said.

Prisons Are Shutting Down In Netherlands Because People Are Not Committing Crime

In 2013, 19 Dutch prisons closed because the country didn't have enough criminals to fill them. Now, five more prisons are slated to close their doors by the end of the summer, according to internal documents obtained by The Telegraaf.

While these closures will result in the loss of nearly 2,000 jobs, only 700 of which will transition into other roles within Dutch law enforcement, the closing of prisons follows a steady drop in crime since 2004.

Funny enough, the "problem" of empty jail cells has even gotten to the point where, last September, the country imported 240 prisoners from Norway just to keep the facilities full.

Still, according to The Telegraaf's report, Justice Minister Ard van der Steur announced to parliament that the cost of maintaining sparsely-filled prisons was a major problem for the country.

A number of factors underlie the Netherlands' ability to keep its crime rate so low, namely, relaxed drug laws, a focus on rehabilitation over punishment, and an electronic ankle monitoring system that allows people to re-enter the workforce.

A study published in 2008 found the ankle monitoring system reduced the recidivism rate by up to half compared to traditional incarceration. Instead of wasting away in a jail cell, eating up federal dollars, convicted criminals are given the opportunity to contribute to society.

Our country Nigeria can learn from this by introducing REAL social security to discourage crime.

20 Year Old Model Jumps Naked To Her Death Rather Than Be Raped By Two Men - Photos

20 year old model and university student named Gulay Bursali, jumped naked from a very high Istanbul apartment where she was staying with her boyfriend, to escape being raped by an estate agent who rented them the flat, alongside his friend.

Gulay Bursali and her boyfriend had asked a property agent if there was an empty apartment they could rent for the weekend, and were given the keys to a property in Basaksehir, a district located on the European side of Istanbul. But after partying with friends in a local bar, they had gone back to the flat where they ended up being attacked by the estate agent.

According to the boyfriend’s statement to police, the estate agent had tricked his way inside by claiming he wanted to get some things from the apartment.

Once inside, the estate agent and a friend beat him up, took his phone and locked him inside one of the rooms. They then locked the young woman in another room, and stripped her naked before she managed to open the window and climbed outside, threatening to jump unless they let her go.

Eyewitnesses said they had seen the naked young woman hanging out of the window.
One man told local TV:

"I heard somebody screaming help, and I thought maybe it was just someone messing around. Then I saw a naked girl hanging out of the window.
"She was yelling don't pull me inside, if you try to pull me inside I will jump. Those inside were shouting at her to come inside, saying they were going to call the police.
"But she wasn't interested, I heard her threaten them two more times to say that she would jump, and was calling for somebody to help.
"I didn't say anything, I felt if she moved even a bit she was going to fall and that was why I didn't say anything. I just called the police. While I was doing that, she jumped."The boyfriend who was freed from the flat and quizzed has now been released and police are looking for the estate agent and his friend.

FIFA Bans Ivory Coast Footballer Emmanuel Eboué For 1 Year

FIFA, the world's football governing body has banned Ivory Coast and Sunderland defender Emmanuel Eboué for one year. FIFA passed the judgement on the former Arsenal defender this morning for refusing to pay his agent for agent fees owed.

This means won't be able to play football for 360 days effective from this morning until the fee is completely paid. The ban will be lifted once he pays up. Read FIFA's full statement below....

''Emmanuel Eboué, who has represented Côte d’Ivoire and is currently registered for the English club Sunderland A.F.C., is to serve a ban on taking part in any football-related activity that will last for one year or until he pays the total outstanding amount owed to his former agent if this occurs before the one-year ban has elapsed.'' The origins of the case involve a decision passed by the single judge of the FIFA Players’ Status Committee in July 2013 regarding a contractual dispute according to which Mr Eboué was ordered to pay the players’ agent Mr Sébastien Boisseau an amount owed to him based on the representation agreement between the two parties.
The decision was taken on the basis of the FIFA Players’ Agents Regulations in force at the time (2008 edition). ''On 9 September 2014, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee decided to sanction Mr Eboué with a fine of CHF 30,000 for failing to comply with the decision of the single judge of the Players’ Status Committee on the basis of art. 64 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. The player was also granted a final period of grace of 120 days to settle his debt, upon failure of which the creditor – Mr Boisseau – would be entitled to request that a one-year ban on taking part in any football-related activity be imposed on Mr Eboué.''
Mr Eboué appealed to CAS against the FIFA Disciplinary Committee’s decision, but the appeal was dismissed and the decision of the Disciplinary Committee confirmed in full. ''Following the expiry of the final deadline granted, Mr Boisseau requested that the one-year ban be imposed on Mr Eboué in accordance with the decision of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee. The relevant parties, including The Football Association which has been requested to implement said ban, have been informed accordingly.''

Fayose Says The Chibok Girls Are Not Missing

Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, has declared that no student was abducted by the dreaded Boko Haram sect from Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State.
Over 200 pupils of the school were reportedly abducted in 2014 by the terror group. But Fayose said the report was politically motivated to influence public opinion against the Goodluck Jonathan administration ahead of the 2015 general elections.

Fayose spoke while declaring open a two-day workshop on “Political Aspirants Capacity Enhancement” organised by Women Arise for Change Initiative, organised for women from Ekiti, Osun and Ondo.

He said, “Today, many opposition leaders are underground. I don’t think any of these girls is missing; it is a political strategy. Who is fooling who? If you wanted to use it to remove some people, you have succeeded already.

“I don’t know if there are missing girls but no indication has shown that. It is a political strategy, because I don’t think any girl is missing. If they are missing, let them find them.”

The governor also took a swipe at #BringBackOurGirls campaigners, saying some of them are using it to look for appointments.

He claimed that human rights groups are quite since President Muhammadu Buhari came on board.

Fayose said, “I’m concerned about the activities of human rights groups. Today the government of the day is obeying court order of their choice, while human rights are not respected.

“We must talk about government providing cover for criminals. You are now using that person to harass innocent person. You will never have peace when you hide justice.”

He added, “Police came into town yesterday (Tuesday) to arrest political opponents. If you like, demonise me, I will demonise you. I don’t need the police and the SSS to walk in my state. It is when you are not popular that you walk with police.

"Any government that rises against me, that government will come down. I’m Peter the rock.

Tinubu Made The Impossible Happen – Fashola

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola (SAN), says the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, made the impossible happen by ensuring that for the first time in Nigeria’s history, opposition parties successfully merged and went into elections.

Fashola said this in a video tribute to commemorate Tinubu’s 64th birthday.

The minister, who was present at the colloquium held in Tinubu’s honour in Abuja, said the country was crashing under Goodluck Jonathan but Tinubu steered Nigeria away from the course of destruction.

Below are the words of Fashola:

“It was dangerous for Nigeria to keep that administration for another term and the evidence of that was before us. The country was falling apart. You must salute the courage, the passion, the foresight of Asiwaju to reach across and say ‘let us forge a partnership to save Nigerians, to save ourselves’.”

The minister added, “On whether or not there could be a merger, everyone said it wasn’t going to happen, it had never happened in the history of Nigeria and as far as that was concerned, it (the merger) was a victory that the impossible had become not only probable but possible and that was due to Asiwaju’s self conviction and, as I said, his ability to mobilise people and materials behind an idea.”

Actress Chalize Theron Suffers Nip Slip At A Movie Premiere In Germany
