Reports just reaching us from Rafin Guza quarters in Kaduna state reveal that a commander of the radical Islamist sect Boko Haram has escaped from officers of the State Security Service (SSS).
Daily Trust reports that officers of the SSS stormed the quarters in the small hours of Wednesday morning to arrest the alleged commander of the Islamist militants but were unable to apprehend him.
It was reported that out of frustration, the security officers arrested the suspect’s wife, while another leader of the terrorist group was reportedly arrested in Lere in possession of explosive vests.
A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the SSS officials arrived at night and surrounded the alleged commander’s residence before they forced their way in.
“The man was not in the house when the security agents arrived, but his wife was arrested. Some guns and ammunition were also found in the house,” the source said.
The source also revealed that he heard several gun shots during the operation, adding that the security agents also conducted a house-to-house search that night.
The source confirmed that a member of the terrorist group who allegedly specialises in making explosive vests was arrested in Lere by the operatives, and that several arms and explosives were recovered from him.
Efforts to reach the Kaduna state command of the SSS proved abortive but a source within the agency who is not authorised to speak with journalists, said the suspects will be transferred to Abuja.
Rafin Guza-Kawo Junction in Kaduna North local government area was attacked in the night at about 9pm, when suspected Boko Haram operatives who were on a motorbike opened fire on policemen, killing two while a woman was also hit in the cross fire.
The Boko Haram destructive activities may soon come to an end because Nigerian troops have continued to consolidate on the massive victories recorded over the Islamic militants, attracting praise from international quarters and a large section of Nigeria.
