May 29 Handover Date Must Be Sacrosanct – Methodist Church

The Methodist Church Nigeria, Diocese of Egba-Yewa, Ogun State, has called on the Federal Government, Independent National Electoral Commission and other stakeholders to ensure that the May 29 handover date remains sacrosanct.

This call was contained in a communique issued after the 33rd Synod of the church held at Mayegun, Iwoye-Ketu circuit, Ogun State.
In the communique signed by the Bishop of Egba-Yewa and Archbishop of Riye, Most Rev. Luke Odubanjo, the church said the change in election dates should not affect the handover date.
The communique read in part, “Despite the change in election dates, we appeal to the Federal Government and other stakeholders to ensure that the May 29 handing over date remains sacrosanct.
“Politicians must put God first in all situations on the forthcoming elections, and they should avoid do-or-die politics.
“All stakeholders should shun thuggery and hooliganism to allow for free, fair and credible elections.”
While it also urged the government to ensure the stability in electricity supply, it pleaded for massive job creation for the teeming youths roaming the streets.
In the area of health delivery, the church commended the government on the containment of the Ebola virus disease, but appeal to all tiers of government to ensure that necessary health facilities were put in place to cater to the health needs of the people.
