The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, has confirmed the preparedness of the electoral body to conduct the re-scheduled 2015 general elections
Professor Jega gave the assurance at a meeting with Civil Society Organisations in Abuja to assess INEC’s readiness for the elections, which is expected to begin on March 28.
According to Channels, Jega, however, expressed his concerns over the security of the personnel that will be deployed for the exercise, especially in the north east where troops are currently battling to flush out terrorist group, Boko Haram.
INEC had announced the postponement of the elections which had been scheduled for February 14 due to security concerns caused by the Boko Haram insurgency.
The electoral umpire had announced a shift in the general elections dates to March 28 and April 11 after met with political stakeholders in Abuja a week to the previous election dates.
Rumours of how the INEC Chairman was pressured into postponing the elections by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party thereafter, surfaced in the media.
Meanwhile, the Chief of Army Staff, Kenneth Minimah has said that elections may not be held in North-East communities recently liberated from Boko Haram terrorists.
In a related development, The National Think Tank Group has released results of a survey it carried out to determine the winner of the 2015 presidential election coming up on March 28.
