Confidence vote: 84 Senators back Saraki

Despite his legal travails, it is clear that the Senate is solidly behind their President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki following an overwhelming vote of confidence by 84 of his peers today.

The Senate meeting for the first time on Tuesday after resuming from its six weeks holiday took the vote in spite of the arraignment of Saraki before the Code of Conduct Tribunal for alleged false declaration of assets.

He was alleged to have committed the offence 12 years ago when he was the governor of Kwara State.

The motion for the vote was moved by Senator David Umaru from Niger State and supported by Senator Sani Ahmad Yerima.

Nigeria’s upper legislative chamber has 109 members, which means Saraki was overwhelmingly supported by members from both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Incidentally, it was the support of the PDP that ensured the former governor of Kwara secured the Senate’s top post against the wishes of his party, the APC.
