Again, trailer falls in Lagos

Another trailer carrying 40 feet container fell on the road at Alapere area of Lagos metropolis yesterday. A witness said the driver of the trailer, which was heading to Ibadan end of the Lagos- Ibadan Expressway, lost control of the vehicle. According to him, the trailer summersaulted twice before falling down. He said: “We were queuing for fuel at Total filling station on the expressway.

What we heard was a huge frightening sound. It was when we looked up that we saw a trailer carrying container tumbled and later fell down. Thank God, no life was lost.” The trailer’s number plate had been removed while the driver had left the scene when our correspondent got to the scene.

But some officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) were still trying to remove the trailer from the road. Last Tuesday, two trailers carrying containers fell at bad portions of the Apapa- Oshodi Expressway. One of the trailers fell on a Toyota Hiace bus. According to witnesses, the trucks were trying to swerve through the potholes between Cele and Itire bus stops when the accidents occurred.

Last month, another trailer carrying container fell across the road at Oshodi. About two months ago, a container fell off a trailer on top of the Ojuelegba Bridge on Western Avenue. It fell on two vehicles. Three occupants of one of the vehicles were killed. Following the incident, the state government restricted the movement of articulated vehicles to between 9pm to 6am. The restriction was relaxed given the protests by trailer drivers and gridlock on Lagos roads as a result of the order.
