Ajimobi: We’ll conduct local govt elections soon

In response to the agitation from many residents of Oyo state, Governor Abiola Ajimobi yesterday promised that some caretaker chairmen would be appointed in December to oversee the local government councils in the state, while proper election would be conducted by early next year.

The governor made the promise yesterday in Ibadan against the insinuation that he refused to conduct council election throughout his first term in office because he was afraid some opposition parties might win some of the councils and create problem for his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). He said this while answering questions after a lecture he delivered to kickstart the 67th convocation ceremony of the University of Ibadan.

The lecture entitled: “Challenges of Good Governance in an Emerging Democratic Setting: The Nigerian Perspective”, was held at the Trenchard Hall of the institution. At the event witnessed by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Dr. Umar Musa Mustapha, among others, Ajimobi said he had earlier delayed the council election because he wanted to see the outcome of the general election.
