Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, has threatened to shut down the Federal University of Oye – Ekiti (FUOYE), if the authorities failed to remit taxes due to the state without delay. The governor, who spoke when the newly appointed vice-chancellor of the institution, Prof. Kayode Shoremekun, called on him in his office in Ado-Ekiti, equally condemned the recent sacking of vice chancellors of some federal universities.
Fayose, who said whatever contradicted commonsense was best avoided, said the move by the Federal Government deserved to be condemned as there was no justification for the sack. He said: “The sack is unfair and unlawful. We must allow these institutions to survive us.
Every action that would be termed political or against common sense should be avoided. “I openly condemned the action of the Federal Government in the sack of the vice chancellors. They should respect the laws establishing these institutions. As a governor, I fear no foe.
The right of humanity must be respected.” The governor maintained that tax payment was important and should be observed by the institution, failing which it would face the consequences. Earlier, Shoremekun urged the governor to be patient and understanding as the school was already remitting 50 per cent of requisite taxes to the state.
