Recovered N5m: Two Bankers In Police Custody

More facts emerged yesterday in connection with the N5 million which the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit said it discovered the state House of Assembly Complex, Alausa, Ikeja Sources yesterday said that two bank officials of an undisclosed bank were being detained at Alausa Police Divisional Headquarters, following the ‘missing N5 million’ since December last year.

A source at the state task force headquarters, Alausa, also said that the announcement of the ‘missing money’ might have led to promotion and award of recognition for the two officers who discovered the money – Inspector Eliziekia Abiona and Ogunbiyi Agbabu.

When contacted yesterday, the task force Chairman, SP Olayinka Egbeyemi, refused to comment on the issue on the grounds that he was not authorised to speak to the press. He directed our correspondent to either the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mrs. Dolapo Badmos, or the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni.

However, a source said: “The DPO Alausa called oga (the task force chairman) this morning (yesterday) that two bankers from the bank that owns are being detained over the money. “Our men have done a good job here by recovering the money and refused to share it.

The chairman heard about the money last week when he assumed office and he ordered that the money should be announced publicly. “In fact, he commended the officers who found the money but wondered why the discovery of the money was not made publicly before he assumed office because it could boost the image of the police.”

Another officer, who pleaded anonymity, said: “When such money is found, it ought to be announced that such money is in our custody because there is no way you will keep such money and the public will know.”
