UI Students Rusticated After Staging A Protest

Academic activities at the premier University of Ibadan were paralysed on Monday by some students who staged a protest over a disciplinary action the school authority imposed on a colleague of theirs, Tunji Epeti Michael of the department of Petroleum Engineering, Faculty of Technology.
The protesting students, who drove round the campus in buses around 11 a.m, chased out many students ‎from their lecture rooms, barricading some of the roads within the school. As at about 3 p.m they had proceeded to barricade the gate of the institution, forcing people to trek into the campus.

When contacted for details on the protest, the Director of Public Communication of the institution, Mr Olatunji Oladejo said the affected student was rusticated by the Central Student Disciplinary Committee for one semester for his role in the protest in respect of electricity failure in the institution last year.‎
In his statement, Oladejo said: “Mr Tunji Epeti Michael was only rusticated for a semester. He will resume his academic programme at the beginning of the second semester of 2015/2016 academic session. This was the outcome of a meeting of the Central Student Disciplinary Committee on Wednesday March 30, 2016 to consider an allegation of gross misconduct against Mr of Ibadan to the effect that on Thursday November 19, 2015, he led a protest in respect of electricity failure which disrupted the peace enjoyed in Independence Hall and the university as a whole.”
