Mrs. Modupe Sarumi, a school teacher, has urged the Alimosho Customary Court, Lagos, to dissolve her marriage to her husband, Mr. Lukman Sarumi, over incessant beating and refusal to pay house rent. Modupe told the court that she came into the marriage, with a child, whom Lukman promised to love and cherish. But Lukman refused to fulfill his promises.
She added: “I have come to the conclusion that it was better for me to get out of the marriage. “Lukman said he would marry me with my child. I was happy that I found someone who could love me with my child. When I got to Lagos, he started to maltreat me. He stopped caring for me.
He stopped giving me money to feed my child and myself. I wanted to work, but he insisted I shouldn’t. He beats me for no reason.” Modupe said that one day Lukman packed his belonging and disappeared, abandoning her and her kid. He also refused to pay house rent, forcing the landlord to send her and her child packing.
According to Modupe, she ran to different family members of Lukman to narrate her ordeal, but they couldn’t proffer any solution. She said: “I then decided to set myself free from beatings and punishment. If I’m healthy, I‘ll be able to work and make provisions for my child and I.”
